About this Cook
I love to try new ways to prepare food. My Mum is a great cook who introduced us to a wide range of foods at a young age (I loved escargots when I was 5!).
My favorite things to cook
Pasta dishes, fruit pies, cheesecake, cookies, hamburgers, summery salads, sandwiches, jam, relish . . . I'll stop now because this could get lengthy.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My Grannie Bain taught me how to make pastry when I was about 12 years old. She would say, "You can tell it's right by the feel of it." You can't get that knowledge from a written recipe.

My cooking tragedies
This is a good one. A lovely pot of giblet stock simmered on my stove on Christmas day, destined for the roasting pan to make gravy. When it was time, I must have been a bit frazzled. I grabbed a strainer and the pot full of stock, with the intention of straining the liquid into the roasting pan and leaving behind the giblets, neck, and veggies. Instead, I walked to the sink, poured the liquid through the strainer and straight down the drain. I could have died.

Peanut Butter and Banana Dog Biscuits
Our two greyhounds are finding out that being dog treat taste testers is a fitting occupation after retiring from their racing careers. They just loved these treats. Mummy made them mostly as written, except she replaced the wheat germ with bran, because that's what she had. She doubled the recipe and they filled two cookie sheets. You can bake them close together because they don't spread. The dough is very easy to handle. Eight paws up!

Easy Batter Fruit Cobbler
I had exactly 4 cups of blackberries to use up. I looked at a bunch of bb cobbler recipes, and I think I hit the jackpot with this one. I doubled the ingredients. Then, I eyed up my 9x13 pan and decided on the 8x11 instead. It was perfect after 50 minutes. The batter was nicely golden, and it really looked great. The fruit did not end up on the bottom as stated in other reviews. Seasonal fruit seems to do best with this type of recipe, with basic ingredients that let the taste of the fruit shine. This recipe is now in my Favourites folder.

Poetic Pumpkin Pie
How do I love thee, Poetic Pumpkin Pie? Let me count the pieces we ate. This is a break from my traditional pumpkin pie recipe, and we loved the graham crust and the silky smooth filling. I followed the recipe to the letter, with one small deviation. We couldn't wait for it to cool, so I topped each piece with the whipped cream instead of spreading it over the entire pie. It was nicely set even while still warm. Beautiful texture. We are looking forward to another taste tomorrow. Great recipe!
