Banana Crumb Muffins

Reviewed: Jan. 5, 2012
Made exactly as the recipe suggested but (as per other reviewers) added 1tsp vanilla and 1/4 tsp cinnamon to the batter. Also tripled the cinnamon in the topping-- and they are DELICIOUS!! Will definitely be making again and sharing the recipe with friends. Very easy and tasty, and can be made with ingredients that are always around the house :)

Turkey Potato Casserole

Reviewed: Dec. 25, 2011
I tried this last night to use up some leftover turkey and it was pretty tasty! I didn't quite follow the layering directions and I wish that I had in retrospect-- but the casserole was easy to make and my other half was raving about it. I'm not a mushroom soup fan but it really compliments the other flavours. Will definitely make again after roasting a turkey and would recommend to a friend :)

Chinese Chicken Fried Rice II

Reviewed: Feb. 11, 2011
I have to agree with the author-- DO NOT use rice that you just cooked! Makes for a very sticky meal in the end. I made this a couple times now and wasn't terribly impressed with it. It was a nice rice dish, but not any tastier than what I could have gotten in my supermarket. Think I'll probably keep looking for another recipe.

Vegetable Lo Mein Delight

Reviewed: Feb. 11, 2011
I didn't put in *quite* as much Soy Sauce as recommended and I used sesame oil rather than canola, but otherwise I followed the recipe exactly and I LOVED the flavour!! The sauce was surprisingly tasty and reminded me of the sort of thing you'd get at a chinese restaurant. The vegetables could easily be substituted with whatever you had on hand and I'm sure it would taste just as good with chicken added in. Thanks for sharing this one! I have already made it a few times, and definitely will again!

Almond Chicken Stir-Fry

Reviewed: Feb. 11, 2011
This recipe as is (in my experience) did not taste good. BUT I was able to take the basic ingredients and with a few tweaks I made a great meal. So for that I give it 2/5 stars. Starting with the positive: I loved the almond flavour that this stir fry offered. And pairing it with pineapple was shockingly delicious. I also like that I didn't have to use a whole bunch of different pots to make this; it was very dish-friendly! The first time I made up my sauce though, there was way too much soy sauce for me-- that's literally all I could taste in the sauce. I ended up throwing out all my hard work and starting over. My second time around I used sesame oil (rather than canola oil), added an extra tsp of brown sugar, put in the whole can of pineapple (juice and fruit combined), ommitted the Soy Sauce, added some extra spices and lemon juice, increased the amount of ginger and chopped up some Gala apples to add to the mix. I also adjusted the corn starch ratio, as I had trouble getting my sauce to thicken up. Anyway like I said, I had to basically rewrite the recipe to end up with a tasty product. So I can't in any good mind give it a better rating. It provided me with some inspiration, but isn't a dish I would recommend to a friend. Sorry!

Cinnamon-Sugar Popcorn

Reviewed: Feb. 11, 2011
What an outstanding recipe! I followed the instructions exactly as they were written, and my Popcorn turned out delicous. I even made a second batch the very next day (and it was gone again in no time!). Tasted very much like a cinnamon roll, would recommend to anyone who likes caramel popcorn! This is a really tasty variation!

Farm Macaroons

Reviewed: Feb. 11, 2011
Absoloutely delicious recipe! In less than a week I've already made two batches of these, neither of which has lasted more than a day or two. The steps were easy to follow, easier than even a traditional cookie recipe. As suggested by other reviewers, I made sure that my egg whites were almost room temperature when I whipped them and added my sugar in a steady (but slow!) stream at the side of my bowl. Didn't have any problems getting my whites to whip up. Although I did end up baking them for much less time than recommended: both times my Macaroons were baked in 10 minutes or less. The cookies came out light and delicous, one of my favourite recipes yet. I would recommend this to anyone craving a quick, sweet treat! :)

Peanut Butter and Banana French Toast

Reviewed: Feb. 11, 2011
I had really high hopes for this recipe, but after making a batch for my girlfriend and I we were left a little dissapointed. We followed the recipe exactly as it was presented, and found that the French Toast basically came out tasting like a regular PB&Banana sandwich. We could barely tell that there was french toast mix at all, the only thing that made it taste anything different from a regular sandwich is that it was warmed up. It's not that they tasted *bad*, but they certainly weren't worth the effort we put into making them. Honestly I think I would have preferred just making regular french toast. It was a nice idea, but didn't win me over enough to ever make them again :(

Oatmeal Maple Syrup Muffins

Reviewed: Jan. 16, 2011
After my dad was told to get off white sugar/flour from his doctor, I made these up as a healthy alternative... and then made another batch two days later! They turned out moist, filling and sweet-- great for a quick snack. I didn't have any dark brown sugar on hand, so I substituted 1/2 c of light brown sugar & 1 tbsp of dark corn syrup. I also used whole-wheat flour instead of all purpose, and 2% milk instead of half-and-half. Next time I might also make a brown sugar/cinnamon topping to put on before baking for an extra touch. Anyway great recipe! I've already made a few times AND shared the recipe with a friend, would make 'em again in a heartbeat. :)

Cappuccino Muffins

Reviewed: Jan. 16, 2011
I made these a couple years ago exactly as the recipe suggested, but never made them again. They were easy and tasty enough-- just nothing special. Basically a dressed up chocolate chip muffin, although the topping was a nice touch.

Chocolate Chip Peppermint Cookies

Reviewed: Jan. 16, 2011
I made these a couple years ago, and never ended up making them again. They're *absoloutely* delicious if you eat them right away, but once cooled I didn't find they kept well. By the next day the remaining 20 of my cookies were dry and tasteless, and most of them were thrown out. Again, they're great to eat right out of the oven (if you shrunk the recipe) but I wouldn't recommend if you're not planning to eat them right away.

Apple Cinnamon Muffins

Reviewed: Jan. 16, 2011
These are officially my new favourite muffins! Made 2 batches in a couple days, and they're already gone again. Very moist, flavorful and they look really impressive (just like something you'd get from a coffee shop!). Looking over the recipe, I did use white sugar in (instead of Splenda) and also added 1/2 tsp of nutmeg to the batter. I also used brown sugar instead of white for the topping. And the first time I made them I used vegetable oil instead of apple sauce, since it's all I had. Will keep "tweaking" the recipe to my liking, but they're great as is too! I would recommend to anyone looking for a treat :)

Banana-Chip Oat Muffins

Reviewed: Jan. 16, 2011
Great recipe for banana lovers! I have made these muffins a few times and never had them disappoint! I like that it uses both white and whole-wheat flour for extra fiber and the bananas make for a very moist product. Thanks for sharing the great recipe! Vegetable oil can also be substituted for Apple Sauce if you don't have any on hand, I made them both ways and didn't notice much difference.

Fettuccine with Sweet Pepper-Cayenne Sauce

Reviewed: Jan. 16, 2011
Delicious recipe, will definitely make again! Love the flavour of the bell peppers and it's got the perfect amount of kick to it. The only thing I changed is I used Balkan-Style Yogurt instead of sour cream, and it turned out just fine. As the author suggested, I expect this will taste awesome with grilled chicken-- so adding that next time!

Apple Yogurt Pancakes

Reviewed: Jan. 16, 2011
These made a tasty pancake and not any more difficult than your traditional recipe. The yogurt definitely helped them stay nice and moist, and they were really filling. My girlfriend says they're the best pancakes I've made yet (and I make a lot of pancakes!). I did make a few changes to the recipe though, since I wanted a sweeter pancake than it called for. I substituted the vegetable oil for unsweetened apple sauce, added a 1/2 tsp each of nutmeg and cloves, and also added about 2 or 3 tbsp of white sugar. Next time I would definitely use a fairly "light" plain yogurt (I used Balkan-Style) and sift my flour too, since they were a little heavy otherwise! So overall a great recipe, once tweaked a little bit. Glad I stumbled on it :)

Strawberry Oatmeal Breakfast Smoothie

Reviewed: Jan. 16, 2011
I was *SO* impressed with these smoothies! Had them already a few times this week, and will definitely use the recipe again. They were fast, almost effortless and pretty darned delicious! Filled me up all morning, as promised. The recipe tastes great as is, but I think that you're pretty free to change the fruits/dairy as you please and still end up with a great smoothie. For a thicker drink I might try yogurt instead of soy milk, or substitute the fruit for raspberries.

Szechwan Shrimp

Reviewed: Jan. 16, 2011
This recipe turned out to be a great one-pan lunch option for my other half and I. The sauce was quick to make and the ingredients were mostly things I already had on hand, making it extra affordable. We served it with a pouch of instant rice with some red peppers mixed into the sauce. Overall it had a very nice flavour and satisfied our craving for Chinese food! That being said, the sauce does have a certain "ketchup-y" flavour (I thought it tasted similar to a chinese sweet and sour sauce), so if you're not a ketchup lover be warned! We put in about 3/4 of the recommended spice, and thought it was mild enough to use the full 1/2 tsp next time. Also used Sesame Oil instead of Vegetable, and if you have it on hand I would definitely recommend using it instead!
