About this Cook
My name is Ms. Zuke, and I love to cook! It can be hard, what with going to school full time and working full time, but food is a passion of mine, and I'm determined to get better at cooking and baking!
My favorite things to cook
I love cooking healthy and delicious meals, though I do have a soft spot for pot lucks. :) It's so much fun having the best dish at a get together, with everyone asking me for the recipe.
My favorite family cooking traditions
I'm Ukrainian, so my family and I come together at least once a year to make varenyky and borscht, and I make a pretty mean holubsti! These traditional dishes mean the most to me.
My cooking triumphs
My grandmother passed away before she could pass on her family recipes to us, so it has been a triumph of mine to find and tweak Ukrainian recipes to make them my own. My family loves it!
My cooking tragedies
I once cooked up a stir fry and didn't realize how long everything was cooking. It was tasty because of the sauce, but it was like eating tasty mush with rice! *LoL* My sweet boyfriend told me it tasted good, but it was definitely gross in my book! Hahaha! Neither of us ate the leftovers. :D

Soft Onion Sandwich Rolls
I don't have a bread machine, so I processed these using my KitchenAid, and I let them sit for about an hour (didn't increase in size at all, unfortunately). After additional kneading (after that first hour), I don’t know if this is standard, but it took my rolls almost 3 hours to double in size! I was going to just throw in the towel after the first 40 minutes, but luckily my husband had an additional 2 hours of yard work to do. So, I set the baking sheets of rolls on my dishwasher (which had recently ran a load and was still quite warm) with the towel over them and took my time. Lo and behold, when I finally went to throw them in the oven, they had finally almost doubled in size. *LoL* Maybe it’s because we live in Phoenix and are already running our air conditioning throughout the house (set to about 80 degrees)? Who knows. Overall, they were very yummy, even though they didn’t raise quite enough. We will definitely be eating them again! (For those wondering, the only thing I had to change (as we don’t use milk) is I changed the milk to water. I used a .25 ounce packet of active dry yeast, as per the instructions.)

Ukrainian Red Borscht Soup
This was delicious! It brought me right back to when I was in Ukraine. I didn't add any sugar, but everything else I kept right with the recipe. I will definitely be recommending this to my family. On a side note, toasted and buttered sourdough bread has always been my favorite "side dish" for this soup: so good!!
