Make-Ahead Turkey Gravy

Reviewed: Nov. 28, 2013
I think this idea of making turkey broth, BEFORE Thanksgiving is an excellent idea!! I also added garlic powder, onion powder, and poultry seasoning, and I TASTE-TESTED the broth, it to see if it needed a little bit of salt, and then I made the gravy, and slowly cooked it, until the floury taste was gone. WOW, this is a keeper!!, Thank You very Much for this excellent recipe!! I am going to do this for Christmas dinner!! I give this recipe 5 stars

Homemade Apricot Jam

Reviewed: Jul. 5, 2013
To be prepared, the jars should be sterilized for 10 minutes, before you start to make the jam, and keep the heat under the canner on warm. The water bath canner should still have the hot water in it, so it doesn't need to have water added to it, unless the water level is below the top of the jars, also, as you fill the jars with the jam, each jar should be added back to the hot water, so the jam doesn't cool off a lot. When I can jam I have 2 big pots, a water bath canner, and a 20 qt stockpot to make the jam in.I found out that using the city water in the water bath canner eats away at the sides of the canner, so I always use about 3 1/2 gallons of distilled water, in the long run, it's worth it, because you wouldn't have to buy water bath canners every time you want to make jam.Using distilled water keeps the calcium deposits and rust out of the inside of the canner and has saved me money, because I haven't had to buy another canner, just the fruit to make the great jam with!! Cook the jam to the point where the jam coats the back of a regular tablespoon

Slow-Cooker Barbecue Ribs

Reviewed: Jul. 5, 2013
The chili sauce and hot sauce detracts away from the taste that a good B-B-Q sauce should be. I always add some Liquid Hickory Smoke to the B-B-Q sauce that I make and no vinegar, about 2 Tbsp. of honey mustard, 1 tsp ea.onion & garlic powder,... If making more, the recipe has to be adjusted, and I always taste test it, before I ever add it to any meat that I want to B-B-Q I made twice the amount of sauce for the ribs. I don't buy store bought B-B-Q sauce, I alwys make my own

Carrot Cake III

Reviewed: Mar. 26, 2013
I love carrot cake !! You don' have what size eggs to use, I used large-room temp. eggs. The ingredients that I changed, is, I substituted unsweetened applesauce for the oil (to keep the calories down), and we don't like nuts, so I added fresh dark raisins, and I always use pure vanilla extract, not the imitation vanilla, there is a big difference. I always make sure that I pre-heat the oven for 20 minutes, and place the 9"x13" greased and floured metal baking pan in the center of the oven, where the temperature isn't too hot, or too cool, and always keep a temp. gauge in the oven at all times, and baked the cake for 60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center of the cake comes out clean When I made the frosting, I used 1/4 cup butter, left out the pecans, and used 2 teaspoons of pure vanilla extract, and I start with a one pound box of powdered sugar, adding a little at a time, until it was to the thickness that I liked. When making a cake from scratch, the ingredients, must be exact, and the flour should be fluffed first, before measuring it, and then level off the measuring cup, and beat the batter only until all of the ingredients are blended, and no more. Thank You for this nice recipe!!

Canned Apple Pie Filling

Reviewed: Sep. 15, 2012
This is a good recipe, except for in the directions, it says to pack the sliced apples into hot sterilized jars, I like to blanch my fruit first, blanching first keeps the fruit from floating to the top of the jar, and I never add food coloring

I made this, and it's delicious. I used a bundt pan, and I did have a little batter left over, but it didn't go to waste!!
