Chef John's Pumpkin Pie

Reviewed: Nov. 27, 2014
Made 4 diffterent pumpkin pies for family Thanksgiving dinner. This is the only one that cracked! Had a "tasting contest" and asked everyone to rate the pies. The winner? The Libby's Famous Pumpkin Pie recipe - the one printed on the can. Chef John pie was really creamy and thick - the texture was a turn-off for me, but you might like it.

Barbeque Halibut Steaks

Reviewed: Jun. 18, 2014
Yummy. I used 1 tbsp. honey instead of 2 T. Brown sugar. Otherwise I followed the recipe - did not have time to marinate and it still turned out great. I like that it was not too sweet. Very simple and the grilling made it taste even better.

Easy Mexican Casserole

Reviewed: Apr. 5, 2014
I guess I am an outlier, because I can't understand how this recipe got such high reviews. It tasted like a heavy baked meat chili. I did add the taco seasoning to the ground beef - otherwise, I followed the recipe. For such a mediocre dish, It also took a long time with the 20 minutes of simmering in salsa, in addition to the 30 minute baking time. Usually the 4 star plus recipes on this site are wonderful, but not so in this case. Hubby usually asks for seconds and I heard zilch, even though I gave him a smaller than usual portion. He's very complimentary if the dish tastes good, but tonight he was politely silent!

Famous Japanese Restaurant-Style Salad Dressing

Reviewed: Feb. 6, 2014
Very good recipe. I made a half recipe for our small family. Like many reviewers I added some sesame seed oil for more asian taste. I agree with the reviewer who said to use fresh ingredients - not canned, dried, powdered, etc. I regret putting in the ketchup. It tasted much fresher without it. I tasted it before realizing I forgot to put it in. Next time I will use a little fresh tomato instead, or just skip it. I also added some grated carrot for extra texture but it was not needed. I threw in chunks of the onion and celery and used the small cup of the magic blender. BTW, if you are making a full recipe, use the larger cup.

Buddy's and Bubba's Homemade Dog Food

Reviewed: Nov. 5, 2013
I have to be honest - I did not try this but I did not want to lower the ratings, and yet I did not know how else to answer "Teresat" who said her dogs got the runs on this recipe. I think maybe the problem is that she added a can of sardines. I recently gave my dog a tiny bit of tuna as a treat and he loved it but his stools immediately got too soft. Try the recipe as written and don't add any canned fish.

Miso Maple-Glazed Salmon

Reviewed: Apr. 12, 2012
This sauce was actually pretty good, but too sweet for my taste, so I removed a star. Next time I will reduce the maple syrup to a teaspoon or so. Remember that the seasoned rice vinegar is also sweet. Instead of following these complicated instructions, I just poured the sauce over the fish, no marinating, & baked it in the toaste oven for 14 min or so. Maybe it didn't have the glazed effect but it didn't mess up my kitchen and it was easy.

Debdoozie's Blue Ribbon Chili

Reviewed: Apr. 9, 2012
Debdoozie - this is my new favorite chili! I was known as the Chili Queen in my family, but your recipe is better than mine. This is great just as written. The first time I used Carroll Shelby's Chili seasoning - I think I prefer that to the one Debdoozie recommends. The first time I used Pace Picante Hot - my daughter & I liked the spiciness but my husband & son preferred a milder taste so I now use Medium. I have changed the recipe by using real garlic and adding a can of mild green chilies. But as I said before, the recipe as written deserves 5 stars. The negative reviewers sound like they haven't even tried it.

Libby's® Famous Pumpkin Pie

Reviewed: Nov. 19, 2011
Even though this recipe has been reviewed to death, I must add that this is THE basic pumpkin pie recipe. It is very simple to make & turns out great each time. Creamy with just the right combination & amount of spices - get fresh individual spices and not the all-in-one pumpkin pie spice. It is watery however; don't let that scare you, it firms up nicely in the end. Also, there seems to be a little leftover filling - do not overfill your pie and make sure you get the DEEP dish pie crust.

Halibut Supreme

Reviewed: Jul. 6, 2011
I was a little skeptical but I tried it due to the good reviews. I had company over and she asked how i made it so that was a good sign! I substituted plain yogurt for the sour cream b/c I did not have sour cream on hand - and I forgot the lemon but it still tasted great - very moist with a little "kick" from the cayenne pepper. Next time I may try even a bit more cayenne but we love spicy.

Feta Cheese Turkey Burgers

Reviewed: Jun. 15, 2011
My whole family loved this! I used the turkey package that had about 1 1/2 lbs. of meat, and it turned out juicy and tasty. I also used only 6 oz. of feta, but that was because it was the size of the package. I will add garlic next time, as per some reviewer's suggestion - we love garlic, but really it was tasty without it. Simple and good! We haven't served it in a bun yet - we serve with brown rice and a green veggie.

Chicken Breasts with Herb Basting Sauce

Reviewed: May 25, 2011
Pretty disappointing - I made it with skinless, boneless meat & followed the recipe. The flavor was bland - I am shocked at all the 5 star reviews! I'm giving it 2 stars because the chicken was nice and moist but where was the basting sauce? After it was done, I made a citrus dijon mustard/butter sauce because I felt it needed more flavor.

Baked Potato Soup

Reviewed: Jan. 24, 2011
FIVE STARS for sure! I had made chicken stock from a Costco chicken & frankly was tired of chicken soup. Then I made this recipe and WOW my whole family loved it. I forgot to add the pepper and it was still delicious. The only changes I made was I used olive oil instead of bacon drippings to cook the onions, and since I did not have half and half, I used undiluted evaporated whole milk. I do not think it need any more flour, the creaminess was perfect. We used the bacon as garnish, but none of us felt the need to add the cheese, and we are cheese lovers here. But the soup was so rich and flavorful it did not need any. Will be making this again and I would even make it for guests. My daughter pronounced my cooking "really pro" and it was so simple to make.

Guacamole Chicken Salad

Reviewed: Oct. 20, 2010
As written, pretty bland. I added hot sauce, garlic salt and served with salsa. Even at that, only okay, maybe 3 stars. Will not be making this again. Did not care for the walnuts; did not seem to really go with the salad.

Lamb Chops with Balsamic Reduction

Reviewed: Sep. 7, 2010
My family really liked this dish. My teenaged daughter pronounced it, "Scrumptious and gourmet!" I chose this recipe because you can make it right away - I did not have time to marinate the meat. I used onions only because I did not have shallots. Also, I used the 3 year old bottle of balsamic vinegar I had in the fridge - I found out online that it doesn't go bad. I made the dish in a big cast iron pan. Maybe next time I will get the high end balsamic vinegar, but the good old Trader Joe's brand was delicious anyway.
