Baklava

Reviewed: Jan. 2, 2012
Wonderful recipe - I have made this for Greek and Arab friends, and all of them loved it, one even asked for the recipe. If that's not a sign of a great Baklava recipe, I don't know. :) I've followed the tips of previous reviewers - 1,5 times the amount of sauce, let it cool, and cut almost to the bottom before you bake the baklava. I also use organic vanilla powder instead of liquid vanilla extract. Since this has annoyed me several times now, and I always forget about it: Be sure to have a big/high enough saucepan - the sauce gets VERY frothy (>2 times the initial volume!) when it's simmering, and will spill over onto the stove if the saucepan is too small!

Amazingly Easy Irish Soda Bread

Reviewed: Mar. 21, 2013
Like others before me have mentioned - waaaaaay to dry and crumbly (Had to add quite a bit of butter milk and butter just in order to make the dough stay together instead of fall apart.) It amazes me how this recipe turns out "way too runny" for some, and "way too dry" for others. I wonder if there are different kinds of buttermilk or something that might cause the difference?

Cranberry Pistachio Biscotti

Reviewed: Mar. 21, 2013
Really easy to make, everybody loved them! Made them exactly according to recipe. The only thing I found was that in my oven, they seemed to require quite a bit more time than asked for in the recipe.

Whipped Cream Cream Cheese Frosting

Reviewed: Mar. 21, 2013
Lighter than the other cream cheese frosting I usually use, but for me, personally, it tastes too much of whipped cream and too little of cream chesse.

Cream Cheese Penguins

Reviewed: Mar. 21, 2013
These are just brilliant! I originally just made them because they looked so funny, but everybody loved the mixture of tastes as well! Using olives of the same size works just as well, really. Just don't do what I did the first time I made them and buy olives with stones - it's really fiddly and takes ages to get out the stones in a way that leaves the olives intact enough to be transformed into penguins! (Cute and cuddly, boys, cute and cuddly!)

Tiramisu Chocolate Mousse

Reviewed: Mar. 21, 2013
This was good, but to me, even though I love Tiramisu, not as good as other non-tiramisu chocolate mousse recipes I've tried. Turned out to be neither quite Tiramisu nor quite chocolate mousse instead of the wonderful combination I had been hoping for. But that's of course a matter of taste.

Sticky Date Pudding

Reviewed: Mar. 21, 2013
This has turned into one of my favourite recipes ever. Soooooo tasty! I bake the puddings in muffin forms, then serve them with vanilla ice cream and frozen cranberries - they make the whole arrangement look very pretty! Making half the sauce is definitely enough, like others before me have stated.

Strawberries with Balsamic Vinegar

Reviewed: Apr. 20, 2013
Like so many others here, I was skeptical. My boyfriend, who loves strawberries, was against me trying out this recipe in the first place, because he thought it would ruin the berries. We both - and all of our guests - enjoyed the result a lot, though (ate it with and without vanilla ice cream). We didn't notice the pepper much (noticed too late that we didn't have any black pepper to grind and used the last remnants of an old glass of ground pepper instead, which probably was the problem there). The balsamico taste kind of blends into the background, and instead, the combination of balsamico and sugar really brings out the strawberry flavour. Next time, we'll try serving this with fresh mint.

Orange White Chocolate Chip Beltane Cookies

Reviewed: Jun. 11, 2013
I made these with orange glazing since I was going for quite an orange-y flavour, and by themselves I, like others before me, found they had too subtle a taste. With glazing, I found them okay, definitely enjoyable if you just need something to go with a cup of coffee or tea, but not amazing. I was disappointed that I didn't taste the white chocolate at all.

Apple Bavarian Torte

Reviewed: Mar. 4, 2014
Wonderful taste. Since some reviewers suggested that the apples needed some softening and I don't have a microwave, I put the apple slices and some milk in the oven at 175 degrees C while I was preparing the rest. Definitely going to be repeated!
