Joey's Peanut Butter Cookies

Reviewed: Jul. 19, 2014
These were picture perfect. I substituted 1.5 cups of self rising flour for the flour/salt/baking powder mixture, and they set up beautifully. Ten minutes baking time yielded a nice soft cookie. *update: just made the recipe as written, but added a handful of milk chocolate chips and baked in a cake pan. (Start testing at 20 minutes to see if it's done. Mine took 23 minutes.) I melted the remainder of the bag of chocolate chips (1.5 cups) with a few tablespoons of peanut butter in the double boiler, and used it to frost the completely cooled cookie. I sprinkled chopped peanut butter cups on top, just in case there wasn't enough PB/chocolate going on already. This was a beautiful and simple birthday treat for a friend whose favorite food in the world comes in an orange and brown wrapper. ;-)

Cheddar Bay Biscuits

Reviewed: Jul. 14, 2014
A cookie scoop made it easy to portion these out, and it also helped them bake more evenly. (I may be the only one, but when I make drop biscuits with spoons they tend to be spiky and I end up with little overdone horns all over them.) I will have to change the name of mine to Monterrey Bay Biscuits, as it turned out that I had Monterrey Jack and not Cheddar in the stash. For my topping I used a tsp of Lawry's Garlic Salt, a quarter tsp of Old Bay, and a healthy shake of Parmesan cheese. Another dash of cheese over the whole batch after I added the butter mix...just for good measure. My husband is not a huge bread eater, but he crammed three of these in his mouth as soon as they had been topped, and declared them to be better than the original. Thanks for such a great recipe. This is a keeper!

Rich Chocolate Truffle Pie

Reviewed: Jul. 12, 2014
Hollymamma's review was right on the money. I followed the recipe exactly. I had a beautiful whipped cream, and the second I added the chocolate mixture - just a small amount - it deflated and became soup. Now I am left looking for a recipe to serve at tomorrow's big family dinner. Very disappointed.

Peanut Butter Bars I

Reviewed: Jun. 15, 2014
This recipe literally saved me! I needed to produce a sweet treat on a deadline. I fell for a food blogger, and like every other time I have made a blog/Pinterest recipe....it was a miserable failure. I know better than to stray from AllRecipes, because the reviews and suggestions make a good recipe great. With two hours until my deadline I had two pans of multicolored blog-inspired garbage. I decided to try these, and they were *awesome*! I have never made chocolate chip/peanut butter frosting, but it was picture perfect. I make everything with parchment paper, so I easily lifted them out of the pan, cut them with a pizza wheel, and put them in candy papers for pretty presentation. The taste-testing husband has already declared that I need to make more soon...for him. I can't thank the poster and reviewers enough!

Hot Tamale Pie

Reviewed: Jun. 15, 2014
With other recipes, I often base my approach on the reviews as much as the original recipe, but not when the recipe comes from Chef John. :-) I followed it as written, except I used ground pork (we're not beef eaters). The feedback was not the usual, "yeah, this is pretty good" that I am accustomed to with casseroles. This was described as "killer" and "the best". Definitely a keeper, but I knew that before I started. I have learned so much from Chef John.

Chocolate Chess Pie II

Reviewed: Jun. 15, 2014
I took the advice of most reviewers and added extra cocoa, but followed everything else. It was a *huge* hit with the family. I was informed that this was going to replace birthday cake at future parties. Simple vintage recipes are often the best.

Basic Flaky Pie Crust

Reviewed: Jun. 14, 2014
I have tried several crust recipes in search of the perfect marriage of ease & taste. I love all butter crusts, but find them frustrating to work with. All shortening is easier, but lacks a little taste. I used this recipe and for the fat I did half butter/half lard. So far, I think this has been the best reviewed pie crust I've made. It had the added advantage of being the prettiest when baked. I made a chocolate chess pie and was afraid the bottom would be soggy, but even the first piece came out perfectly. I may have finally found my crust recipe.

Fudge Sauce

Reviewed: May 27, 2014
Awww yeah! This was perfect. I made one of those ice cream sandwich cakes, and felt bad taking that shortcut, so I thought I would dress it up with homemade fudge sauce instead of the shelf stable stuff. I am going to take it as a good sign that one guest just scraped this off the top of his cake and left the rest of it to melt. I didn't add the cinnamon because the cake was peanut butter flavor, but I followed the rest of the recipe as written. I will be making this again!

Garlic and Herb Pull Apart Bread

Reviewed: May 27, 2014
Wow! I sat down to write my review and looked over the recipe to see if I had done anything differently....I added tons of Parmesan cheese. For some reason I thought that was in the recipe! I cut the biscuits into small pieces, put them in a gallon size bag with the dry ingredients (and lots of Parmesan), then got them All Shook Up (hey, I am in Tennessee...) I put the dry coated dough balls in the Bundt pan, then poured melted butter over the top. My pan is pretty heavy duty, so it took forty minutes to bake, but the results were FABULOUS. Every guest LOVED them, even the baby, who licked the cheese coating off the bread. I will be making this again and again, and encourage you to make the same mistake I did by adding cheese!

Garlic Mashed Potatoes Secret Recipe

Reviewed: May 27, 2014
Wonderful! It was the perfect side dish for the popular Baked Ziti recipe here. I have gotten carried away with adding so many extra spices and dairy products to my traditional mashed potatoes. It serves me right to find out that less is more. :-)

Chocolate Peanut Butter Ice Cream Sandwich Dessert

Reviewed: May 27, 2014
I made this exactly as written, but I used creamy PB and made homemade fudge sauce. The taste was fantastic, but the texture was not. The peanut butter layer froze *solid*, and could only be sliced by removing the entire dessert from the pan, laying it on the countertop, and sawing it with a heated bread knife. The ice cream sandwiches melted into a sticky mess, but the top stayed solid, so it was not visually appealing once I did get to serve it. I don't know if it was a mistake I made in preparation, perhaps, or maybe that I used creamy peanut butter instead? The guests LOVED the taste, but it wasn't worth the effort that went into sawing it apart.

German Chocolate Cake Frosting

Reviewed: May 24, 2014
This is magnificent! I needed a German chocolate birthday cake, and my attempt to make the cake from scratch resulted in absolute garbage. I decided to doctor up a box cake and hide it under the most fabulous frosting I could make. This fit the bill! Why buy a tub of preservatives when a few minutes time and some simple ingredients results in this? Thanks for a fantastic recipe!

Vanilla Glaze

Reviewed: May 24, 2014
Perfect. Just what I needed to top some birthday cake blondies. I had dark-colored vanilla extract, though, and it threw the color off. I know that's an obvious one, but I am a new cook and didn't think it through. Still, once covered with rainbow sprinkles, it's beautiful!

Buttermilk Chess Pie

Reviewed: May 19, 2014
I have never made anything similar to this, so I had to simply trust the recipe based on the positive reviews. A new friend expressed a desire for 'chess bars', so I settled on this recipe. I made it in a square dish (11"x7"?) and there was more than enough filling. I had to bake it longer because of the larger dish, but it turned out well. Southern husband says it's good....that's my rating system. ;-)

Potica

Reviewed: May 19, 2014
Worth the effort!! I am a novice cook, but really wanted to recreate my late Romanian Grandmother's famous Christmas walnut roll. It's been over 20 years since I've tried it, so I didn't have clear memories of what it even looked or tasted like. As soon as my parents took a bite of this they immediately said, "This is just like Mom's!" What a compliment! I love that I am able to bring back some family tradition at the Holidays. Thank you for sharing this recipe!

Ruth's Grandma's Pie Crust

Reviewed: May 19, 2014
This recipe has convinced me to try pie making again! I have always had trouble with crust. I had a good recipe, but the dough was so hard to work that I gave up on pies. My husband volunteered me to make a pie for someone this weekend, so I had to deliver. I tried this recipe because of the reviews, and I am *so glad* I did! It was easy to make with ingredients I had on hand, and the dough was a breeze to work with. I was afraid it wouldn't turn out because it was so much easier than I have come to expect when making crust. I was rewarded with perfect, flaky crust. I made it exactly as written, but next time I think I will try the butter flavored shortening to take it to the next level. Thanks for sharing this recipe!

Slow Cooker Chicken and Dumplings

Reviewed: May 19, 2014
This is perfect exactly as written! I love reading reviews of how people tweak dishes to make them better, but this recipe didn't need tweaking. My Southern husband, son of the world's best cook, declared these to be perfect. You probably have already picked this up from other reviews, but I quarter the biscuit dough with a pizza wheel. This is going to be an often repeated recipe in our house!

Creamy Peanut Butter Fudge

Reviewed: May 18, 2014
This recipe has saved all my friends and family from ever having to eat concoctions of candy melts again! I am a novice cook, and definitely not experienced with candy thermometers and different stages of candy making. Some of the reviews frightened me, so I just followed the recipe exactly. Oh. My. Goodness. This was the most perfect and beautiful fudge. I will never again go to a Holiday party with something made of microwaved chocolate chips. If this is your first attempt at candy making, it's a great place to start. My husband had two co-workers try to place orders, thinking I was a professional! Thanks for making me look so good!
