About this Cook
Retired librarian, widowed mom, old-as-dirt news-junkie, and occasional moonbatty biddy.
My favorite things to cook
salads, soups, casseroles, goodies, i.e. baddies
My favorite family cooking traditions
My ancestors cleared land and homesteaded farms from Maine to Montana, and their traditional dishes exploited seasonally ripe, fresh ingredients prepared simply, often separately, with at most a sprinkle of sugar or salt brightening the flavor. A pitcher of milk was passed around for those who liked it wet.
My cooking triumphs
doughnuts, beignets, caramels, croissants, puff pastry
My cooking tragedies
My attempt at candied roasted chestnuts produced stones you probably couldn't cut with a chain-saw, let alone chew, not even after I soaked them overnight in brandy and cooked them in a steamed pudding. Determined to grind them into submission, I tossed a handful into my trusty blender and broke the blade.

Creamed Salmon on Toast
Successfully made it in the microwave by twice interrupting the power to stir. Substituted for canned a family preference for (cooked) frozen peas and ladled it atop boiled potatoes, Norwegian-American style, instead of toast. With fresh-ground black pepper, sooo yummy.

Sweet Potato, Carrot, Apple, and Red Lentil Soup
I had to substitute many of the ingredients, and yet it turned out so delicious, I'd like share with others, similarly bereft of the "right stuff" what worked for my family. For the apple, I subbed a green pre-ripe pear; for the chili powder, mere cayenne pepper; for cumin there's really no sub, so doubled the ginger, for which I subbed dried for fresh; too lazy to make stock, so simply subbed plain old fresh tap water; and lastly, though we did have yogurt, after trying some as garnish, we all scraped it off. The soup was so good without it, we agreed no need to "paint the lily".

Prize Winning Oatmeal Drop Cookies
Despite what she named her cookie, the contributor omits the cup of raisins she credits with winning her a second place red ribbon. The raisins might compensate for the fact only 1/3 of the sugar of your standard cookie recipe is called for, hence the result tastes like crackers not cookies.
