About this Cook
Since retiring from the business world I have spent the past ten years travelling and collecting recipes. We visit Italy at least once a year and always come home with a new "favorite" for the year. I'm a first generation American, my parents were from Croatia, Croatian recipes are bacically Mediteranian with a lot of Italian influences. I love trying just about anything and many times end up in a kitchen where we are dining, especially in Italy, the Italians love to share their expertise and love of food!
My favorite things to cook
Just about anything fresh, using seasonal available foods. I dislike "contrived" recipes, they never really "wow" my visitors. Most people love fresh, good quality and simple, it can't be beat! If you ask any Italian/Mexican/Croatian/French chef they will all tell you the same thing....freshness and quality are the only things that really matter.
My favorite family cooking traditions
I have so many recipes that have been handed down to me from my Mother and Aunties from Croatia (most I can't even spell!) that are prepared and served on special holidays, religious days, birthdays, food can always be a celebration!
My cooking triumphs
Are when guests do not want to leave the table and extend the coffee to liquors to cheese, nuts and more conversation!
My cooking tragedies
The first year I moved to Boston in 1979 and invited neighbors to dinner and served a traditional Mexican dinner, not one had tasted Mexican food before and everyone politely pushed the food around on their plates! Now Mexican restaurants abound, it's very popular but about 30 years too late for that night!

Salad in a Jar
This a great and unusual picnic course and I do agree with one reviewer who suggested putting in the dressing first and greens last thus keeping the greens fresh and crisp.

Jersey Fresh Tomato Soup
I got a little carried away with the tomatos this summer and then it rained over and over, so lots of moisture and heat gave me a bumper crop the likes of which I have never seen before! I put up abut 50 Pt. jars of "Baking Sauce" (like spaghetti sauce but more versatile), 10 Qt jars of salsa. Now, this wonderful soup which is so good. I followed the recipe ingredients exactly but used my hand blender to puree half of it, still leaving half of it chunky. We'll add fresh basil as we use the soup....have a lot of that too! Thank you "Shorecook" for posting this. Shoregirl in Maine....Elizabeth

Hot Curried Tuna Sandwiches
I gave this a 5 star because this recipe saw me through many meals during the end of the monthly budget squeeze over 55 years ago when my husband and I were college students. In those days we divided our monthly budget to a daily amount I had to spend, usually $7.00 a day. Gas in those days was usually around 35 cents a gallon so we usually went home for weekends and mooched off our parents who lived close together, never the less, the following Monday of the last week saw us with a five dollar bill which then was enough to buy a quart of milk, a loaf of bread, 1 pound of ground beef, 1 dozen eggs, 2 or 3 cans of tuna and a box of cereal, the rest was usually found in a box from our sympathtic mothers along with a couple of dollars in cash (no credit in those days). Sorry to digress but this old recipe brought back memories, we tried the curry and it's hard to believe but even old folks can change, we loved it! Thank you Bajathecat for posting it!
