About this Cook
I am the 7th girl of 9 girls in a family of 12 siblings..Cooking was always the highlight of our day..My Mom and Grandma really didn't like us hanging out in the kitchen,,but sometimes we would find a way to sit long as we didn't get in the way..And not all at the same time..Maybe 1 or 2 at a time..I never went to school for cooking, I just happened one day after being a bakery worker,,got a call to help out a friend who worked in an assisted living facility. I helped her pour beverages and clean up..She was sick one day and asked me if I could handle the cooking for one day..I was so scared but I did it,and that was back in 1992.. and have worked in a kitchen since until disabled in 2009..
My favorite things to cook
Chili, casseroles, stews, and pies are my favorites..I also like to cook with tortillas.I could just come up with something in my head and wrap in a tortilla and fry it or wrap it and steam it!I also makes some screaming Barbeque ribs and sauce! I can also make you cry with my sweet potato pie..
My favorite family cooking traditions
Christmas time..Granny would cook the famous fruit cake..The aroma was so over whelming..Saturday nights were preparation for Sunday dinner..if you've seen the movie "Soul Food", that was our house on saturday's..Gumbo with crabs, shrimp, and dinner franks was always present in the "R" months..Greens of any sort was the favorite vegetable in our house..We didn't know anything about canned veggies or frozen..Always fresh..And dessert was almost every day..
My cooking triumphs
My first thanksgiving on my own..I have 5 boys and they could eat!1 My first thanksgiving had to be special..I cooked so much,,all by myself..Everything was perfect..They tell me even my gravy was so good that they would drink it for soup! That was my first 5 layer coconut cake..Mmmmmm good!
My cooking tragedies
One experience is when I was at work and the prep cook the day before was supposed to take out sausages for my meal the next evening..She had forgotten and they were still frozen when I came on my shift..I tried to cut the sausage while they were still frozen and cut the tip of my finger off! Oh My!! My only worry was that the meal get cooked for the dinner rush! I made sure that everything was going to turn out fine,,then I was off to the hospital ! Thank God the tip of my finger somehow grew back!!
