I've made this for years and it's awesome as written. I usually add some chopped carrots. Lately I have changed the method I use because I didn't like making the white sauce. I cook the sliced potatoes in the microwave for 10-12 minutes, covered, stirring a few times. Meanwhile, I sauté the onion, celery and carrot in the 5 T. butter, and when they are softened mix in the 5 T. flour. Cook and stir the flour/veggie mixture for a few minutes, then add the water, bouillon and milk. Stir in the ham. Remove the potatoes from the microwave and add to the soup. I like to mash about half the potatoes before adding.
