First Signs of Spring

Its official! I have seen the first signs of spring here in NE Iowa. For some it might be the robin or those first 40 degree days where all the snow is melting and the air has that springtime scent to it. For me, the first sign of spring is the seed catalogs
in the mail.
I gaze at them longingly, from cover to cover, just as I did the Sears Wishbook as a child of the 70s. I plan and I scheme about adding extra garden space. When should I start those first seeds upstairs under the grow lights with my African Violets? What new
hybrids should I try this year? Or should I just go retro and look at all the Heirloom varieties? The possibilities are endless. I dream of big salads of all fresh produce that I've grown. Or that first tasty BLT with a huge juicy Beefsteak tomato as the main
attraction.I try to decide where to place my beehives on our garden plot. Pollination, fertilizer, watering, weeding....Ahhhh, glorious days of summer are just around the corner.
The snow still covers the majority of the ground here in Iowa but with thoughts of gardening in my head, the sun seems a little brighter today and the winter a little less dismal.
