Not sure if it is the brisk fall weather here in NE Iowa or what is triggering my craving but I am just dying for a turkey with all the fixings. Bought a small 9# turkey today after church. I've not blogged in quite some time. It isn't for lack of things going on my life but rather for a lack of time. Today was one of those rare days when I felt like I had really been given a special treasure. I am the most grateful recipient of about 15# of fresh rhubarb. Its official! I have seen the first signs of spring here in NE Iowa. For some it might be the robin or those first 40 degree days where all the snow is melting and the air has that springtime scent to it. For me, the first sign of spring is the seed catalogs in the mail. I gaze at them… MORE

About Me
Growing up, my folks owned a restaurant. I loved to cook with my Dad. These are some of my fondest memories of spending time with him. He always made us each order a different dish when we went out to eat. We would then have a sample of whatever every one else was eating. It was OK if you didn't like it but you had to at least try it. Ahhh, those were the days. Now I am a nurse. I live on a farm and in my spare time I love to cook, quilt and raise bees. I love having fresh honey, farm raised beef and our own vegetable garden. Life is good!
My favorite things to cook
In the summer, I love to grill outdoors. During the winter, I like making soups, stews, roasts and just about anything that catches my eye. I am always trying new recipes. I'd love to have a large area to entertain friends and family, but my cozy little kitchen will seat 6 comfortably and 8 if we suck in our bellies and don't eat too much!
My favorite family cooking traditions
I always loved cooking for Christmas when my grandmother was still alive and all of the Aunts, Uncles and Cousins would come over. There is something about 10 women in a kitchen catching up on all of the family news and reminiscing about the old days that is just amazing.
My cooking triumphs
Thanksgiving turkey the first year I was married to my husband was a triumph. Mostly because I made it and then hauled it to another house several miles down the road and it was still delicious. I've also mastered pretzel bread and Canadian Cheese Soup from Le Cellier at Disney. (The last two recipes are my husband's favorite!)
My cooking tragedies
Those will go with me to my grave!
