I have always loved experimenting with foods in and out of the kitchen. I grew up watching my grandma cook and sampling her foods during the preparation process. She is my inspiration in cooking today.
My favorite things to cook
I absolutely love cooking Asian stir-fries and pastries. Anything that is difficult and requires skill plus SEVERAL tries before getting it right is also right up there as a favorite for me!
My favorite family cooking traditions
I love making Thanksgiving dinner. From the main course to the drinks and desserts...all of it brings me joy because I love feeding my guests and watching them enjoy it!
I am starting a new one, though...I have moved on to Black Eyed Peas and Cornbread for New Year's Day!
My cooking triumphs
Rugalach! I tried making this wonderful little pastry and remember working so hard to make the dough without over handling it and filling the twists just so. I really had a lot of patience and time, so I guess it made all the difference. I made them thinking about my mom because she always store bought them.
My cooking tragedies
My very first apple pie! I decide one day in my early twenties to make an apple pie, but didn't know the secret to making pie dough. I kneaded the living life out of the dough for at least about 45 minutes!
I got a good feel for the dough, at the very least, and had it perfectly lined in the pie dish. I packed in my apple mixture and covered it up. When it was finally done I took it out of the oven, and could barely wait for it to cool! I just couldn't figure out why I wasn't able to cut through it...was there something special I didn't know about cutting apple pie? Was my knife too dull?
Needless to say, when I cut into that pie, pieces of pie crust pretty much flew all over the kitchen! It was harder than I don't know what! But in the end, it was ok, my friends didn't judge me...we just ate the inside and I looked for reasons why my crust didn't make it.
