I love to cook. The only thing I love more than cooking is seeing my friends and family enjoy what I make. I love my life...my family...my friends...my home...my island!
My favorite things to cook
I love making traditional Hawaiian food - that's really my comfort food...reminiscent of my wonderful childhood. I love cooking pastas-anything Italian. Making sushi & Japanese food is also a favorite. I enjoy trying new & international cuisine BUT I can't always get all the ingredients on my island!!!!
My favorite family cooking traditions
Aside from the regular American/Western cooking traditions (Holidays, Easter, Etc.) my favorite cooking traditions were established during my childhood...making lu'au for baby parties, graduations, weddings or birthdays including ALL the regular offerings (kalua pig, lomi salmon, squid lu'au, chicken long rice, poi, all the raw stuff, etc.) Chinese New Year was also another time of year we made different kinds of food. I am trying my best to carry on all our traditions!
My cooking triumphs
I think being able to pull off a lu'au for 500+ people is a great triumph - of course I had lots of help! Successfully roasting my first Thanksgiving turkey (several years ago) was a great feeling too. Oh! Successfully making my first "real" cheesecake using a springform pan and the "water bath" method (Chantell's New York Cheesecake-from this site) and having EVERYBODY totally LOVE it!!!
My cooking tragedies
I think the most frustrating cooking experience I have ever had was with a bread machine! I'm not sure if it is because of the humidity here or what, but of the MANY bread machine recipes I've tried, maybe 1 or 2 have come out okay. The rest ABSOLUTELY FLOPPED! And I didn't just try once or twice or even three times! I tried LOTS of times! But in the end the bread machine won and I hung up my bread machine gloves and gave the machine away to my good friend who loves it....OH WELL, you win some, you lose some!
