Weird food pairings and funky cravings

I woke up this morning craving hummus.  That's not really too "out there" because I eat a lot of hummus.  Not usually for breakfast, though.  It got me thinking about weird food pairings, funky cravings etc.  I've had three kids, so I know cravings fairly well.  I ate A LOT of pizza when I was pregnant because I was always craving salty, then sweet, then salty, then sweet.  It was a non-stop tug of war on my system that I certainly paid for in stubborn baby weight.  I fell into the "I'm going to get fat anyway" trap, not once but three times.  During my first pregnancy, I ate an entire loaf of white bread in one day.  I actually drove around with a bag of bread in the car, and ate slice after slice while running errands.  I hate white bread.  My doctor told me to give in to my cravings, because usually the body craves what it needs.  BAD advice.  The body does not need a loaf of white bread.  Some of my weird food pairings have stuck with me, because they really are GOOD, but none of them are very bizarre.  I do love to put my whole breakfast on a piece of toast, and eat it like an open faced sandwich; eggs with salt & pepper, bacon or sausage and toast with jam all in one bite.  It's a perfect balance of salty and sweet, though a messy disaster to eat.  I don't recommend doing it in a restaurant.  Or in the company of others, for that matter.  I've heard of some crazy ones though; barbecue chips and chocolate ice cream, dry toast with canned tomatoes (blech!), stir-fry topped with barbecue sauce.  My son likes peanut butter and jelly with co-jack.  I'd love to hear what concoctions others have come up with!

I don't have to many weird food cravings these days but when I was pregnant with my first I would drink a quart of V8 every day to help wash down a Hostess chocolate cupcake. Tomatoes and chocolate strange. With my second it was tacos couldn't get enough of them. And with my third I ate a pound of frozen green beans a day. Right from the fridge with nothing on them. :)

Umm, when I was pregnant I used to love white rice with a smushed up avocado and loads of salt - not good, I know - and I had hypertension - okay it was just dumb. I also couldn't get enough fish tacos! With my second, my morning sickness lasted 6 months, so I don't think I had many weird food stuff going on. Moving on...my husband loves a bratwurst with grape jelly. I won't even try it...too weird.

I can't recall if this started when I was pregnant 5 years ago, but everytime we have spaghetti I love the taste of pasta, sauce, and salad with ranch dressing together - I twirl a littla pasta on the fork and stab some salad so I taste everything in one bite. I just love how the lettuce stays cold, but then is slightly wilted from the pasta. Weird!

I am just cracking up at the white bread in the car visual! When I was pregnant I craved spaggheti with meat sauce (I was a vegetarian at the time) and watermelon- together! And ate this almost daily. Since I was a veg for taste reasons not animal rights reasons, it was easy for me to break my vegienous (real word?) LOL. One bite of meatsauce, one bite of watermelon, and so it went...

No food cravings when I was pregnant, but had morning sickness for the first 5 months, but when it was over it was like a switch turned my appetite back on. Not to the point of being excessive, but 2 things that stick in my mind as tasting really really good after having the morning sickness was V8 juice and red licorice (NOT TOGETHER!!) LOL! Just something I savored the taste of.

haha.. this will be first time commenting but I thought I would. I have always ate ketchup with black pepper and salt mixed in. Well one nite (while i was pregnant) I was craving it really badly and wanted fries to go with it. Well my ex husband refused to run to mickey D's so I went in the kitchen got some seasoned ketchup and ate it with potatoe chips.. it was sooo satisfying!!!

I had some interesting ones. For my 13 y/o son it was freezies or a bottle of water in the freezer till just about frozen, then shake it so it's like slush and drink that all the time. The twins were anything and everything, I was even enjoying pumpkin pie and squash (two things I had never liked) till I vomited them out of my nose and still can't eat them to this day. My daughter I craved fruit to the point that my tongue cracked and dried up, even to this day I can't eat to much fruit because it is sooo painful. (she loves fruit and veggies and would eat them all the time if I let her). My last one I started to like sushi and Asian more than ever before. Not to weird, but interesting how each one is different!!

Okay, I gotchyer weird pairings: how about peanut butter and bologna? Yes, together...no bread. Just a thin layer of creamy peanut butter on a slice of bologna, rolled up and devoured.

Peanut butter and BALONEY? Ha ha ha! Mine was hot popcorn with plain M&M's tossed in...not all THAT strange but the M&M's get warm and the chocolate melts inside and the candy-coating has a thin layer of butter on it...salty and sweet.
