So I read so many reviews on this recipe I decided to try it. The changes I made were similar to most of the other ones, the meat, I used chuck stew meat instead of a roast. Cut it up into smaller pieces and browned it in a pan, and did the same with onions. I used diced tomatoes instead of stewed and about 3/4 of the way through I wanted a bit more tomato so I used a small can of quality of tomato sauce. I eliminated the sugar, I did use a bit more barley as well. I used 1 1/2 cups as I wanted my soup a bit thicker. My own personal addition to this soup was pecereno romano cheese! I added 3 heaping TBS to it when it had about 2 hours left. Wow! This is so delish, my picky 10 year old loved it. My new veggie soup!
