About this Cook
My favorite things to cook
I enjoy making soups and stews. I also like to cook with dried beans. They are so versatile it's fun to think of new ways to make them and new flavors to try. Love spicy food. I add cinnamon, hot peppers or hot sauce to everything. I've been on a vegetable kick lately, so I've bought a steamer and love figuring out which things go together and what toppings bring out the vegetable flavor. Brussel sprouts and sweet potato with lemon juice and cracked pepper is a winner. So is kale with Parmesan, red wine vinegar and pepper.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Mom always used to make apple pfannkuchen for special occasion breakfasts. She also makes this amazing gelatin dish with whole cranberries and shredded apple for holidays.
My cooking triumphs
Gingersnap lentils! Rainbow Slaw!
My cooking tragedies
Growing up I was infamous for confusing baking powder and soda in my baked goods with awful results. Also, apparently I have a rep for burning things since people always bring it up.

Grandma's Five Cup Salad
Wow. I had never heard of this before, but I made it with fresh diced pineapple, an orange (peeled, cut into rings and then into section bits), Greek yogurt and unsweetened coconut. It is awesome! I skipped the marshmallows, but I'm sure they'd be great if you liked them. It made a great breakfast.

Whole Wheat Rigatoni and Cauliflower, Wilted Arugula, Feta & Olives
Love this recipe. I had to eliminate some of the ingredients cause I didn't have them on hand, but the basic penne, cauliflower (and broccoli I added), spinach, and cheese combo was awesome. I left out the tomatoes, although my sister added some sauce to hers and liked it. If I had the olives and pepper it would have been even better. Oh, I added a can of cannelinni beans too. Made great leftovers.

Chili Mac, Mexican Style
Very easy! Love the poblanos and black beans. Added a couple more garlic cloves and some cumin.
