Thighs on Rice

Reviewed: Jan. 30, 2012
One of the very first times that I really didn't alter a recipe. I have to say, simple and delicious. The only changes I made was to use margarine instead of butter, and a garlic blend seasoning. I also threw in some frozen lima beans which were fantastic.

Bacon-Flavored Dog Biscuits

Reviewed: Jan. 30, 2012
My pup is loving these biscuits but I like others made several changes so it is difficult to review the recipe. I omitted the milk, used rendered chicken fat instead of bacon fat. I was out of whole wheat flour so I used white, cornmeal & rolled oats. Additionally, I added a few tbsps of peanut butter and one banana. Prior to baking I brushed each biscuit with chicken fat for added flavor. He's loving them!!!!

Monkey Bread I

Reviewed: Jan. 3, 2012
Loved this!!! My only complaint was the syrup was a bit too buttery/oily. Next time, I will increase the brown sugar. I also used more cinnamon in the cinnamon/sugar mixture. I used 3, 14 oz cans of flaky biscuits in a large bundt and they cooked up perfectly. Bakers tip* tent a piece of foil (spray with baking spray) over pan for the first 15 - 20 min of baking and you wont have an undercooked center. I let it cool for 10 min and then turned it onto my serving platter and let the syrup run through the cake. Once cooled, I froze the cake and took it out the morning of my New Years Party. It was fantastic. I drizzled with a simple glaze & it was a great addition to my sweet table and froze up beautifully. No one would ever know I had made it ahead of time. Gotta love a time saver!!!!

Popcorn Cake II

Reviewed: Dec. 12, 2011
I made this cake for my sons 6th birthday party because I made cake pops and needed a cake to put candles in. I had stumbled onto the popcorn cake and was so excited to try it. I am so sorry to say that I am the only one who liked the cake. It looked beautiful. The candy additions I used were awesome. Smarties, mini rolo's, chocolate covered pretzels all mixed together with that yummy marshmallow covered popcorn. I couldn't use peanuts as all kids facilities are nut free here in Toronto but still, I can't understand why no one liked it. Not one of the kids took a 2nd bite. Personally, I give it 5 stars because I thought it was delicious and a nice alternative to a traditional cake but the kids have spoken, all of them. Thank goodness I made the cake pops!!!!!!

Chocolate Eclair Dessert

Reviewed: Dec. 5, 2011
I read the reviews of this dessert and decided to try something different and easy for a change. The filling is beyond sweet and combined with the graham crackers it is really just too much. I also made the chocolate glaze highly recommended and posted over and over which I agree would be better than a canned icing however it was also not very good. My kids didn't like it at all, my husband didn't mind it but agreed it was far too sweet. I wont be making this again.

Pecan Pie Bars I

Reviewed: Dec. 5, 2011
I scaled the recipe down to 24 servings as I did not have enough pecans on hand for the full recipe. The crust was was fine and the filling set up nice. The taste was good but not great. My complaint was that it really wasn't sweet enough for a pecan bar and something was missing as far as the taste. Additionally, having scaled down the recipe, i made it in an 8 x 12 and it came out very thin. I would absolutely make the full recipe in a 9 x13 or 8 x 12. No larger than that unless you want a very thin bar.

Creamy Rice Pudding

Reviewed: Nov. 29, 2011
Excellent and very easy recipe for rice pudding. All I happened to have was either long grained or sushi rice which is a short grain so I opted for the sushi rice. I doubled the recipe and cut the sugar slightly and it turned out amazing! I debated between this and another far more labor intensive recipe. So glad I chose this one.

Chewy Brownies

Reviewed: Nov. 14, 2011
Not a great brownie in all honesty. I did increase the cocoa as everyone suggested. The texture was okay, the taste was really missing something. I've made a different recipe before where I mixed in on the stove top and then baked it and it really was a great recipe. I wont be making this one again.

Delicious Raspberry Oatmeal Cookie Bars

Reviewed: Nov. 8, 2011
I added this to my holiday sweet table and it was a hit. The only changes I made was adding some shredded unsweetened coconut and some sliced almonds to the crumble. I used margarine as I needed it to be non-dairy and I doubled the recipe. It was fantastic, easy and delicious.

Moist Holiday Honeycake

Reviewed: Oct. 28, 2011
I thought this recipe looked familiar. This is Marcy Goldman's "Majestic and Moist New Yesr's Honey Cake" recipe out of her cookbook, A Treasury of Jewish Holiday Baking. The only variation is nutmeg instead of allspice, canola oil instead of vegetable oil, and the sliced or slivered almonds on top. None the less the very best Honey cake ever. I've been making it for years for holiday's and all year round and would never think of using a different recipe. Two notes, almonds are sprinkled on top prior to baking and you should let it cool in the pan for about 15 - 20 min and then invert onto a wire rack to cool completely before placing it on a serving platter.

Passover Lemon Bars

Reviewed: Apr. 13, 2006
I am unsure what type of oven was used originally 400 is way too hot. I tried this recipe 3 times to finally get it right! The crust burnt in 10 minutes at 400. So did the topping/filling. Tried 350 seemed to be okay. But everything was stuck and came out yucky. Definately reduce sugar to 2 cups and grease the pan if you actually want them to come out of the pan. Do not use the parchment trick as the filling is so thin it seeps under. Not bad taste for a Passover dessert but what a waste of time and ingredients if your information is incorrect.

Clone of a Cinnabon

Reviewed: Sep. 8, 2003
These weren't bad although I highly recommend trying Cinnamon Rolls 111 by Miss Alix. Myself and all who have tasted both recipes agree. They are also made in a bread machine but they really taste just like the cinnabons in the mall.

Blueberry Cream Muffins

Reviewed: May 12, 2003
These muffins are fantastic. I substituted buttermilk for the sour cream and 3 heaping cups of blueberries, I also used 1 pkg of vanilla sugar instead of the vanilla extract. They turned out wonderfully and are just flying off the plate. I will definately be making these again soon!

Blueberry Coffee Cake I

Reviewed: Apr. 11, 2003
This is a delicious cake except the cake part seemed a little to thin. The second time I made it I increased the cake by 1 1/2, and left the topping as is and it came out perfect and was enjoyed by all.

Passover Chocolate Mandelbrot

Reviewed: Apr. 7, 2003
My sister n law made these for pesach last year. These are fantastic you would never know they were kosher for passover. She actually got the recipe out of the Canadian Jewish News and when I looked up the recipe in the archives it was this recipe. Do not hesitate to make these, you will not regret it!

Kentucky Butter Cake

Reviewed: Apr. 6, 2003
Fabulous! My husband is not a cake eater and he had three slices. My kids loved it. I did listen to the other advice and added some cinnamon to the sauce. I also made 1 1/2 times the sauce and it was perfect. By the way I as someone else mentioned always use bakers joy, it is wonderful, and my baked items never ever stick. I live in Toronto and it is not available here so I bring in 20 cans at a time. This cake is wonderful I will definately be making it again.

Sugar-Free Frosting

Reviewed: Apr. 3, 2003
I have several diabetics in my family and I am always trying to create a delicious dessert for them. I have created many wonderful recipes and I don't use artificial sweeteners so they taste great but they don't always look very decadent. I made some sugar free cinnamon buns adapting one of the recipes from this website and topped it with this icing which was infact quite good. It made these cinnamon buns look just like the originals, and for once they had a sinful looking sugar free dessert. Thank you.

Easy Lemon Bars

Reviewed: Apr. 3, 2003
These lemon bars were pretty good and very easy for my kids to make. Although they didn't like them, they did have fun making them. I listened to some of the other reviewers and doubled the filling, I don't think these would have been very good at all if I hadn't.

Easy Apple Coffee Cake

Reviewed: Mar. 31, 2003
Not my favorite apple cake. I have a much better recipe from scratch I have been making for years. I made this for a sunday night dinner, I needed something fast and easy. It got mixed reviews - mostly that this cake tasted like a donut shop cake. My husband took the left overs to work and they went wild and could'nt stop eating. I'm not sure what to make of this cake. I found it far too sweet for my taste. I added skor/heath bar pieces (not with chocolate) to the top and it looked wonderful, melted beautifully. Not a bad cake in a pinch I suppose, but I definately prefer scratch.

Homesteader Cornbread

Reviewed: Mar. 21, 2003
Not the greatest cornbread I've ever had. I was looking for a more cake like texture. I found this spongy and dry. It also had very little taste to it. Will not be making these again.
