About this Cook
I originally come from Sydney, but have been living in the SW of France - the Pyrenees - for about 40 years. I spend 4 months of winter in Thailand.
My favorite things to cook
Main courses, more of the stew or in sauce things. But I do quite like making hors d'oeuvres or entree course too.
My favorite family cooking traditions
I make a lot of French dishes, but I do a lot of Asian food, particularly Indonesian and Malay food. Actually I'd say that I'm pretty cosmopolitan. I hardly do any English dishes though, except for, what I call family style cakes,so different from French cakes.
My cooking triumphs
I don't know that I have ever had any. Well, none that I would write home about anyway.
My cooking tragedies
The only REAL one happened about some 45-50 years ago. I still writhe when I think about it. I didn't know much about cooking but I DID want to impress a man. French AND a Count. I invited some others too. A Scottish friend gave me a foolproof recipe, which was delicious. Well it would have been if it had been. I did exactly what she told me to do. It wouldn't take much more than an hour. But it took hours and hours to cook and we were all starving. I forgot, it was a stew (cheaper cut of meat). Finally it was so tough that none of us could get it down. My friend forgot to tell me that she had cooked it in a pressure cooker. I never saw HIM again.

Chicken Breasts with Balsamic Vinegar and Garlic
I followed the recipe exactly including the flour and used the amount of chicken, garlic, mushrooms to suit my appetite and taste. I halved the sauce ingredients. I like anything vinegar, but am not terribly keen on balsamic, as for me it is too sweet. However I always have a bottle in the larder and so used it. I enjoyed it, but it was just on the verge of being too sweet and therefore inedible. It is a simple recipe and quite pleasant, but next time I will either use other vinegar, or mix balsamic with other vinegar.

Toffee Cherry Butter Tarts
Far too much sugar. Too much cherries. They were nice. I think it is the toffee that makes it. May make it again.
