Best Fried Green Tomatoes

Reviewed: Apr. 2, 2012
This recipe is a keeper! I made it as is except for a few changes - I fried them in peanut oil, and only needed a little oil for pan frying. I also added some seasonings to the corn meal/bread crumb mixture: Lawry's seasoned salt, a dash of onion powder, freshly ground black pepper, and paprika.

Broccoli Cheese Soup V

Reviewed: Mar. 7, 2010
I followed this recipe exactly, except I used half Velveeta and half regular cheddar cheese. I also halved the recipe, which was perfect for the two of us with leftovers. Delicious recipe!

Miso Soup

Reviewed: Mar. 12, 2009
This tasted very authentic, just like the soup our Japanese exchange prepared for us once.

Extra Easy Hummus

Reviewed: Feb. 21, 2009
This recipe lived up to its name. I thought the recipe as written was a bit bland, so I added a few drops of sesame oil per another reviewer's suggestion, and then added more cumin, salt, pepper, and paprika to taste. I love garlic so I used 3 cloves. I will use this as my base recipe from now on!

Apple Crisp III

Reviewed: Jan. 12, 2009
This was very tasty considering how easy it was to prepare. I followed the recipe exactly except for using half brown sugar and half white sugar, and I saved time by not peeling the apples. I served it with vanilla ice cream for a simple dessert.

Baked Ziti I

Reviewed: Jan. 12, 2009
This was delicious with the changes I made. I'm giving it 4 stars because I think it would have been a bit bland without the modifications below: I used 1/2 lb ground beef and 1/2 lb. hot Italian sausage. Instead of layering the ingredients, I saved time by mixing the cooked pasta with the tomato sauce, 1 cup sour cream, and about half of the cheese. I also added salt, pepper, and other Italian seasonings. I added the rest of the cheese on top, and removed the aluminum foil for about 5 minutes at the end so the cheese got lightly browned. I put this in a 9x13 pan but it was nearly overflowing, so I would suggest cutting in half or using 2 pans. It turned out really well and is great as leftovers too.

Sweet Dinner Rolls

Reviewed: Oct. 20, 2007
These rolls were AMAZING! I was looking for something similar to the rolls served at a steakhouse chain and these are it! I followed the recipe exactly, except I made rolls instead of crescents and brushed them with honey butter before and after putting them in the oven. The dough was easy to work with and turned out nice and light. I don't want to admit how many I ate straight from the oven!

Southern Potato Salad

Reviewed: Oct. 20, 2007
This turned out just how I'd hoped. I substituted half the mayo for fatfree plain yogurt to make it a little healthier, and followed Retired Cook's advice.

White Chocolate Macadamia Nut Cookies IV

Reviewed: Oct. 14, 2007
I wish I had read through more reviews before trying these. Although they tasted good, mine turned out very thin, crumbly, and flat, and I was hoping to give these as a gift. I agree with doubling the batter since there were too many nuts/chocolate and it didn't yield many cookies. Also I would probably reduce the temp. to 350.

Pumpkin Pancakes

Reviewed: Oct. 14, 2007
I followed the recipe exactly and these were delicious! I used the advice of mixing the wet ingredients in a food processor and flattening out 1/4 cup batter. I whipped some cream with cinnamon, nutmeg, and sugar for the topping.

Brooke's Best Bombshell Brownies

Reviewed: Oct. 7, 2007
To be fair, I altered the original recipe slightly per other reviewers and used half white sugar and half brown sugar and slightly reduced the amounts. The results were bland, dry brownies - boxed brownies would have been faster and tastier. Not sure if it was due to the alterations but I won't be making this one again.

Jamie's Minestrone

Reviewed: Oct. 4, 2007
This was delicious for being so healthy! This recipe is very modifiable depending on what you have on hand. I used 4 cups of stock, 2 cans of diced tomato, & 1/2 cup red wine for the base. I skipped the sauteing step and instead let everything simmer for 1.5 hours. I threw in an entire box of rotini pasta for the last 20 minutes. I omitted the green beans and used about 2 cups of canellini beans. I seasoned with some Tony's Creole seasoning, and then when it was done I added a few dashes of McCormick's Salad Supreme and parmesan cheese.

Mom's Zucchini Bread

Reviewed: Oct. 3, 2007
I followed the recipe exactly other than using half brown sugar and half white, but it ended up way too moist for my preference. The flavor of zucchini was also strong, it wasn't sweet like the last zucchini bread I had. Maybe I'll try again with less oil and less zucchini.

The marinade was easy to prepare, although next time I'll use less curry powder. I saved time by buying a bottled peanut sauce.

Hot Artichoke and Spinach Dip II

Reviewed: Sep. 29, 2007
I made this recipe as directed except for mixing in some of the mozzarella. While tasty, the cream cheese overpowered everything else and it wasn't quite as creamy as the restaurant versions. Next time I'll play around with the proportions and maybe substitute sour cream for the mayo as others have suggested.

Quick and tasty! I followed another reviewer's suggestion and baked the loaf in tinfoil for 20 minutes. I also added more garlic to suit my preferences.

Brownie Caramel Cheesecake

Reviewed: Sep. 23, 2007
I followed the modifications that other reviewers suggested and still had some issues. The caramel layer leaked out and saturated the brownie layer so it was very moist and there wasn't a visible caramel layer. Aesthetically it wasn't the best but my friends raved over how delicious it was.

Goat Cheese Pizzas

Reviewed: Aug. 26, 2007
This was my first time using goat cheese, so I don't know if it was me or the recipe but this just did not turn out how I had hoped. The cheese dried out instead of staying creamy or melting.

Poppy Seed Salad Dressing

This was my first attempt at making my own dressing. Pretty tasty and easy to make - I will probably cut back the sugar next time as other reviewers suggested.
