Surprise Inside Independence Cake

Reviewed: Jul. 22, 2012
This came out beautifully although I had to add almost half a tiny bottle of blue food coloring to make the blue layer. The problem with the French Vanilla pudding is it makes the batter way too yellow. I think I will try just plain vanilla next time and see if that helps. I chose to use a whipped cream frosting and cover the cake with a berry flag- it got raves all the way around!

Joe's Turkey Brine

Reviewed: Jun. 26, 2013
It works beautifully and doesn't leave any after-taste behind. Everything you could want in a brine and so simple too. Made one of the best turkeys I've ever produced for the holidays!

Peach Cheesecake

Reviewed: Apr. 30, 2014
Oh my gosh... I can't possibly say enough good things about this recipe!! Easy to make, every human who has tried it loves it, and we now have to double the recipe just to get a small portion ourselves! This is terrific for home, pot-lucks, anywhere at any time. We actually made this two days in a row because we couldn't get enough! :)

Sweet Barbeque Beans

I made these and my guests LOVED them! Couldn't get enough and they were great left-over too... I will be making this again soon. I also didn't have to make any adjustments to the recipe- a pleasant surprise. :)

Best Ever Saucy Beef Kabobs

Reviewed: Jul. 22, 2012
Absolutely FANTASTIC!!!! I don't think I will ever want to make another kabob- these were so outstanding that we polished off the recipe in no time. Fortunately, I had quadrupled the sauce so there was plenty left to make another batch. I chose to marinate the meat overnight in the sauce and it became so tender that I could have been eating filet instead of sirloin. An awesome winner!!!

Excellent! Recipe didn't need any refining, it was perfect as is- how wonderful is that? Even my biggest meat-eaters loved the way this tasted...

Yummy Sweet Potato Casserole

Perfect casserole, delicate, sweet with just the right amount of nutty flavor. My entire family begged me to make it over and over- since they're pretty hard to please, this recipe is a real winner!

Cocktail Meatballs

Reviewed: Dec. 23, 2012
Tender, tasty and wonderful for guests! I did find that you need to cook them on a very low heat or the sauce will start to burn and they will become very bitter. All in all, as long as you don't overcook, these are excellent!

Thanksgiving Day Salad

Reviewed: Dec. 23, 2012
Makes a beautiful, decorative salad when prepared in a mold and everyone who tried it raved over it, even the ones who didn't use the topping. I will definitely make this again for the holiday meals!

Homestyle Turkey, the Michigander Way

Reviewed: Dec. 23, 2012
Excellent flavor- I brined mine the night before and then doubled the ingredients for my 20 pound bird. You should definitely skip any salt if it has been brined- then you will get some excellent turkey broth to make gravy out of. I baked mine for 1 hour at 375 and then 5 hours at 350- adjust according to size of bird. Never needed any basting, just plopped it in the oven and a beautiful bird appeared when it was done!

Hot Spiced Cranberry Cider

Reviewed: Apr. 2, 2013
A total hit with my guests, so much so that they came back again and again and emptied my supply before expected! I also suggest putting the lemon slices in as you are serving it to prevent a bitter aftertaste. Perfect and so easy to make- and no changes needed!

Chicken Enchiladas I

Reviewed: Dec. 23, 2012
This is excellent using chicken or ground beef, which is great for varied tastes. Adding salsa instead of tomato sauce, chilis instead of green pepper and red enchilada sauce instead of taco sauce really added to the flavor. My guests loved it and asked when I was going to make it again!

Sylvia's Ribs

Reviewed: Apr. 2, 2013
By far THE best ribs I've ever made, bar none. Simple, fall-off-the-bone tender and extremely flavorful. I had doubled the sauce, as another reviewer suggested, but I honestly didn't need extra at all. Just follow the recipe and you will have perfection! Thanks Sylvia!!

American Flag Cake

Reviewed: Jul. 8, 2013
Absolute best show-stopping cake I have ever served! My guests were so impressed that they didn't want to cut into it- but they did and the taste was superb! Moist, colorful and just extraordinary for a patriotic holiday. If there is any down-side, it is the amount of time to prepare since you must not only make the 4 cake layers but also cut and mold and frost in-between various shapes and decorate the top... but it was ALL worth it. Serve it and they will never want anything else again, guaranteed. I used another recipe from this site, Sturdy Whipped Cream Frosting, and it was perfect for binding everything in place, not overpowering the cake and also providing a cool touch for those summer-time barbeques. Just be sure you have the CLEAR vanilla extract- the other will turn the cake yellow and ruin the presentation. Did I mention I LOVE this?

Sturdy Whipped Cream Frosting

Reviewed: Jul. 8, 2013
Excellent, excellent, excellent. This held it's texture while frosting and provided a light and extremely flavorful frosting that compliments but does not overpower the cake itself. I did increase the extract by an additional 1/4 tsp. for the almond and I found it helped decrease any potential cheesy flavor. Can't recommend enough!!

Wazzu Tailgate Chili

Reviewed: Oct. 30, 2013
I won first place last night amongst a large pool of contestants- is there anything more that needs to be said? Excellent, people stripped nine quarts of this while leaving others half to almost full- and the reason why is the medley of tastes. I was highly reluctant to put the peppers listed in, because I was afraid it would be too hot for those who didn't like fire in their food; just the opposite. I taste-tested it on a hot chili aficionado and one who was adverse to spicy food. They both loved it, quoting the underlying flavors that were so fantastic. It has a tiny bite but not enough to make anyone uncomfortable, even children. Pepper it up more if you want but, as the prize tag said, this is the "most exquisite" chili available!

Beautifully festive and well-received by guests. Also time-saving, you can make the dressing the night before and then place it on the salad right as you are serving! A beautiful food addition to the holiday table.
