About this Cook
An avid animal rights supporter, I spend most of my spare time involved in volunteer work with rescue and shelter groups, including humane education. I love my church and we are a very social group- I find allRecipes to be the perfect place to find everything I need for all our gatherings! I'm always short on time so I don't get to cook the way I used to love to- every recipe now has to count more than it used to. :)
My favorite things to cook
I grew up with heavy Southern cooking so fried food and gravy floats in my blood, along with a love of creamy, fatty things obtained from my "Yankee" grandparents! As I've gotten older I have found at least a few things to like out of any cuisine; I will still always return to home style recipes, comfort foods and rich ingredients though. As they say, it's in your blood!
My favorite family cooking traditions
On all holidays we have our set menus of tried and true favorites. I have tried to shake it up a little every year but I still have to carry the routine foods everyone has associated with these meals throughout their lives. I love the holidays, decorating, everyone working together to produce wonderful meals and the companionship of family and others!
My cooking triumphs
Learning to make authentic Indian food, carving out a specific menu that I loved and producing it, even going so far as to buy a specific type of bread cooker from India to make it authentic. The meal was such a success with others that I have repeated it numerous times- labor- intensive but well worth it in the end.
My cooking tragedies
My very first cake I produced when I was 5 years old. My mother has been allowing me to help her in the kitchen and she finally said I was ready to make my own cake for the family dinner. I was so proud of this cake until I bit into it and discovered it tasted terrible (and that's an understatement). I kept asking my parents why they were eating it, that something was wrong, and they just smiled and told me what a wonderful job I had done. Bless their hearts, they ate every bit of it and I wasn't sure which of us was crazy. Come to find out, they ate it only to save my ego and I wasn't insane- I had used cornmeal instead of flour because the bags looked similar. Still embarrassed, even this late in life!

Slow Cooker Pulled Pork Barbeque
Excellent, excellent! It was fairly simple to put together, although I made double the amount in the recipe. The taste was not overpowering, so my son who doesn't like barbeque sauce flavor could still eat it (and it tasted great)! If you want it saucier, simply add some onto your pork on your sandwich. Top with coleslaw and you are all set to go! Fair warning- this gets very soupy during the cooking process so, in order to place it on a roll and not have the bread turn to mush, you need to be sure the meat is drier. If you are eating it out of a bowl, no sauce problems at all. One of the best parts of this recipe was the incredible smell it made all through the house, for almost the entire day- superb!

Restaurant-Style Potato Salad
LOVED IT! So did my very picky family, who always said my mother's potato salad was the only one worth making! This required very little effort, other than peeling the potatoes, and the taste was great. You can add extra mayonnaise if you want it super creamy but you take the chance of drowning out the remaining flavor. I wouldn't change a thing- and I used white potatoes, which worked beautifully as far as texture.

Soul Smothered Chicken
This was okay- but that isn't good enough for all the work that went into making it. I was trying to find something similar to what my southern grandmother used to prepare but this was "fancier" and didn't have as much flavor, nor was it as thick. I guess all these could be corrected by tinkering with the recipe, if you are so inclined.
