Began cooking at 8, for the family by 10, 1st wedding cake at 12. Single soldiers & families were at my house for holidays, all my soldiers got birthday cakes, wedding cakes, etc.
My favorite things to cook
REAL Italian, French, German & Asian food…not as it is prepared in restaurants in the US.
Roast Beef and Yorkshire Pudding is a special meal.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Hot large Christmas Eve dinner and cold buffet for friends and family who drop in on Christmas day was the family tradition for years and I did it whereever i was assigned.
Since no longer near family or military we do Chineese.
My cooking triumphs
I do not look at anything as a cooking triumph…i look at ways i have saved flops and made them hits
i made spotted dick and served it to single soldiers as desert one St Patrick's day. the British soldiers knew what it was but i added chopped apples to it & told my soldiers it was steamed pudding and served Irish Cream over it. it was a success as it was not "true" spotted dick although it had the currents but with the apples it wasn't a purest version.
My cooking tragedies
The top layer of a wedding cake fell off a cake because the rec specialist put the cake on a slanted shelf. I had to buy a 2-6" round layers from a backery, decorate them and have them ready by the reception after the duty day.
