Cheese and Broccoli Chicken Soup

Reviewed: Jan. 28, 2007
I halved this recipe. It made a lot. I did make some changes. To the 1/2 recipe, I used 1 carton (4c.) of chicken stock and 1 1/2 cups of water instead of the water and boullion cubes. I added 1/2 chopped onion and 1 clove of minced garlic. After simmering for 45 minutes, I added about 1 cup finely chopped cauliflower and 1 large carrot, chopped fine. Then I simmered it until they were tender. I added a couple of shakes of cayenne (not too much). I also used 2% milk instead of the cream to make it healthier. In addition to the cheddar cheese, I added a couple of good shakes of parmesan cheese. I then put it in the fridge to sit overnight to let the flavours mingle. My husband said it was the best soup I had made. My husband said it was the b

Chocolate Cakes with Liquid Centers

Reviewed: Apr. 13, 2006
I read the previous reviews and baked this 10 minutes and let it sit for 15 seconds. It was not liquid - only slightly soft in the middle. Disappointing. As far as the taste goes, it was not sweet enough. I used Baker's Bittersweet chocolate. I should have used Semi-sweet, in my opinion. It was ok, but I will look for another recipe.

Insanely Easy Vegetarian Chili

Reviewed: Mar. 17, 2006
I didn't like this chili. I followed the directions as far as the spices go - the only changes I made was to drain and rinse the beans and add a can of black beans and some squash cut up. After it had cooked the last 20 minutes, I put it in the slow cooker and continued to cook it for a couple of hours. At that point I tasted it. It was kind of bland and mealy-feeling. I doubled the chili powder, added some salt and pepper, a tsp of vinegar and let it cook for another hour. Still not so good. So I browned some hamburger, drained the fat and added some taco seasoning. Then I added this to the slow cooker and cooked it an additional 2-3 hours. At this point it tasted pretty good, but I would not make it again. I have had vegetarian chili in a restaurant that was really good, so I will continue my search so that I don't have to add meat to make it good. Sorry.

Zucchini Cake II

Reviewed: Mar. 9, 2006
When I baked this cake and tried it I gave it a 3 star rating. I did not frost it, but baked it in a bundt pan and sprinkled it with icing sugar. It was ok, but the next day it was worse. I wouldn't make it again. It seemed to get denser and did not have a great flavour. I would have given it a 1 or 2 star rating after the first day. Sorry.

Sweet and Tangy Slow Cooker Bar-B-Q Pork

Reviewed: Jan. 22, 2006
I'm afraid we didn't like this at all. The fat from the ribs had slow-cooked out into the sauce. Maybe if you didn't eat it and somehow took out the meat, strained out the onions and peppers and put the sauce into the fridge so that you could remove the fat and then reheat the whole thing the next day, then maybe it would be ok. But far too much work - wasn't crazy about the taste either. Sorry.

Coconut Oatmeal Cookies II

Reviewed: Jan. 22, 2006
Excellent cookie. The only changes I made were to use margarine instead of butter, and to use large oat flakes (not quick cooking) because that is what I had in the cupboard. I rolled them in balls and they were excellent. I think they would be good with chocolate chips too, but then they would be a totally different cookie. I will definitely make them again.

Italian Herb Bread I

Reviewed: Jan. 22, 2006
I used my breadmaker on the dough cycle to make this and then shaped it into an oval shape, let it rise about 30 min and then baked it on a cookie sheet. I realized after I baked it that I forgot the onion powder, but it was excellent without it. I only had the canned parmesan cheese (like you sprinkle on spaghetti) but it turned out great. Excellent recipe.

Beef Barley Vegetable Soup

Reviewed: Jan. 22, 2006
After reading the other reviews, I made the recipe exactly and altered it afterwards. I wanted to see what it was like the way it was written. I found it quite bland and very thick. I added 1 pkg. of Lipton Onion Soup Mix with 3 cups of water, 1 tsp. oregano, 1 tsp. basil, 1/4 tsp thyme powder, 2 tsp. worchestershire sauce, and some black pepper (probably about 1/4 tsp). Next time I would cut the meat up beforehand. I also would use less meat - probably about half the amount. It was more like a stew and yet not as good as a stew because of the "soupy" nature and because the meat was strings instead of cubes. I would try it again with some alterations, but I also would just add everything into the crock pot after the meat was cooked instead of using two pots.

Flavorful Beef Stir-Fry

Reviewed: May 29, 2004
I did not like this recipe. I followed other suggestions and doubled the sauce amount and cut down a bit on the soy sauce. The flavour was very bland and when I tried to fry the beef, the sauce congealed into a thick mess that was burning. I had to add a bunch of water to thin it down and then the meat was boiling, not frying. It was really not good. Sorry.

Honey's Butter Cake

Reviewed: May 23, 2004
I reduced the sugar to 1 1/2 cups and reduced the sugar/cinnamon mix to 1/2 cup. I used real butter and large eggs. I was not as impressed with this cake as I was expecting to be after reading all the great reviews. It was a very nice cake, but nothing spectacular. I most likely will not make it again.

Autumn Muffins

Reviewed: Oct. 25, 2003
Not what I expected after reading the other reviews. I substituted dates for the figs, used dried cranberries and put the nuts on top after cooking them in butter and adding a little brown sugar and flour. Neither my husband nor I liked them that much. Didn't care for the flavour combinations. I wouldn't make them again.

Homestyle Turkey, the Michigander Way

Reviewed: Oct. 18, 2003
I have been making turkey for 30 years and always have trouble getting enough gravy from the drippings. This provided lots of flavourful gravy. I made a few changes. I used Campbell's low salt chicken stock instead of the boullion and water. I used very little parsley and onion powder (perhaps 1 teaspoon each) and I just lightly sprinkled the turkey with seasoned salt.(nowhere near 2 tablespoons) The gravy was salty enough with those additions. I will definitely use this recipe for holiday turkeys from now on.

Peanut Butter Cup Cookies

Reviewed: Oct. 18, 2003
These were great. I didn't have the mini peanut butter cups. I had the peanut butter cup bites which are much smaller and didn't give enough candy in the middle. I will make them again with the correct size.
