I made this pie for Thanksgiving. I only used 6 Granny Smith apples because I thought they were large. Next time I will use 8. I didn't use nutmeg, vanilla, or cinnamon when I cooked the filling as some had suggested because I forgot. When I remembered, I sprinkled cinnamon and nutmeg on the apples. I added vanilla to my syrup after cooking it because it thickened to much. Next time I will get my crust and apples ready. The finished product was beautiful! A little tart. This was my first apple pie. I will make this again. Next time I will slice apples thinner and be sure to put cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla in the syrup as I am cooking the syrup.
