About this Cook
Married 44 years and counting. My husband and I raised 2 terrific daughters, who have both gotten married and have 2 children of their own. We are retired and live on the coast near the Ca/Ore boarder. We love being at home with our four dogs, and each other. My sister and her husband live on the same property, and we enjoy dinner together one night a week. My favorite things to do are read and collect recipes, and cook. The older I get, the more I enjoy it. With so many wonderful recipes here, on AR, I am in my glory. We've had some really great meals, thanks to the contributors of this site.
My favorite things to cook
I absolutely love to make things that take hours and hours. I like the developing flavors, the way the house smells, the tasting as it cooks, and the pride I feel when it turns out amazing. I am in love with slow cooking without the crockpots.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Our family has always gotten together for Thanksgiving. We all helped with the stuffing, the vegetables, mashing of potatoes, etc, but the turkey and gravy were all mama. It wasn't always a great tradition as a child of alcoholic parents. Now Thanksgiving is a wonderful tradition in our family. We all get together with our children and grandchildren at our sister's house and have a beautiful family gathering, with five star recipes, lots of laughs, photo taking all day long, the best desserts, board games for all who want to play, fresh ground coffee, more fun, more memories, year after year. My sister in law is an awesome chef and outdoes herself year after year. She is very organized and gets so much done in advance, that she has time to spend with us. It's our favorite day of the year.
My cooking triumphs
I get the most compliments on my lasagna. I have had so many people over the years tell me they don't usually eat lasagna, but they love mine. I enjoy making it because I cook my sauce slowly. When we have leftover steak, pork chop, roast beef, sausage or taco filling, anything like that, it gets frozen until I make my sauce. Then I cook the sauce with a roast, and whatever leftover meats I had frozen. I use seven different cheeses, and I usually bake it the day after I've put it together, and refrigerated it overnight. The flavors all get to know each other, and it makes a company friendly dinner with a crisp salad and crusty bread, with not much clean up the day of the get together.
My cooking tragedies
I have had several! Lucky for me, my husband is not a picky eater, so to him, most of the tragedies have been edible. To you and I, not so much. My father made a trip to see us. I would be cooking for him for the first time. I thought I would make stuffed cabbage rolls. I worked so hard on those and was so proud of myself. My dad said they were "different" and I agreed. I couldn't put my finger on it, but after he left, I saw what it was. I forgot to put the meat filling in!! There it sat, all mixed together, but not in the rolls. There was just rice and cheese in there and sauce on top. They were very good, but something was definitely missing! My daughters will never let me forget the day we got our first microwave. Now that's a tragedy no one could eat. There weren't many microwaveable foods out yet, but i I did find some chicken nuggets for our little girls. The directions said 30 sec. I thought it was a typo & cooked 30 min! Homemade GOLF BALLS!

Texas Cowboy Stew
This is really comfort food at it's best! You get to smell the wonderful aromas while it's getting better and better. One of my husband's favorite meals with corn bread or tortillas and a green salad. I love that it makes a lot because it's even better the next day. I don't use frozen mixed vegetables. I prefer to add fresh veggies like zucchini, green beans, whatever I happen to have. Also great using sausage with the ground beef, or instead. Just a great recipe, and so easy to make your family's favorite. :)
