About this Cook
My favorite things to cook
I enjoy downhome cooking, but also enjoy trying new recipes. I've been married since 1949 (now widowed) and have been a housewife/homemaker ever since. There are 2 adults living with me so I still continue to cook.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My tradional menus consist of meat, potaoes, gravy, salad and vegetable. I don't bake very often but when I do it's usally Crazy Cake, which my family loves. It's so simple and mixes and bakes in one pan. How easy can you get?
My cooking triumphs
Well, I've very seldom cooked anything my family didn't like. So guess I've been successful, lol.
My cooking tragedies
Not long after I married I tried baking a cherry pie for my hubby on a Dutch oven placed over a single burner hot plate. The dough was burnt on the bottom and raw on the top. Never tried that again! Maybe that's why I don't bake much any more.

Best Fried Green Tomatoes
As I read this recipe I thought how ggod the batter would be for fried onion rings. As someone suggested, I used egg whites only. I eliminated the bread crumbs. I cut the onions 1/2 inch thick, soaked them in ice water for 20 minutes, drained them in a colander and towel-dried them before frying. They come out very crispy and delicious. You could add other seasonings to the cornmeal such as garlic powder and some cayenne. I hope you enjoy these as much as my family does. Have a blessed day .... Betty

Classic Macaroni Salad
I have made this several times with different variations. I always eliminate the green pepper (personal preference), and sometimes add small-diced cheddar cheese. Other times I add chopped pimento-stuffed green olives. The onion varys according to the season. I can't always find good-looking green onions, altho I do like them. This is a very versatile recipe that you can personalize. It's definitely a "keeper"! Thanks for publishing it again, especially for those who might not have it.
