About this Cook
My favorite family cooking traditions
I remember being little and helping my parents, mostly my dad, make a special meal like shrimp creole or spaghetti sauce. I got to measure the spices since knives were dangerous (and I didn't even tell them about slicing myself making tacos at day camp). My mom claims to be allergic to peeling potatos (I'm not kidding since she gets CRANKY when she has to) so every big meal we have even though I don't live at home anymore, I come home to peel the darn potatoes. I've asked, and my grandmother doesn't recall my mom having said allergy. I think I might need to develop this one when I have a daughter ;)
My cooking triumphs
Anytime my MIL likes what I make. I love looking at a recipe and then mentally changing it to make it (usually) better. I'm infamous for combining recipes or making them up, and then not being able to recreate the yumminess.
My cooking tragedies
When I was trying to impress my boyfriend, I made him chocolate chip cookies at his apartment. I didn't pay attention to his roommate not labeling containers. and I used powdered sugar instead of flour in the cookies. Made a huge mess in the oven and his roommate thought I was a bit daft, but was a great ice cream topping. It must have worked since he is now my husband. Second place for me goes to preheating my mother's oven without removing the tupperware she stored inside while we were getting over an ant problem. Ooops.

Authentic French Meringues
I added about a third tsp of cream of tarter to help with stability, and I cut the sugar back by a third. Perfect technique description! They needed a bit longer to bake, but that could be my oven. I left them in to cool overnight, and lovely. Next time a drop of lemon extract. . .

Pumpkin Crumb Cake
Love this! I skipped the crumb topping due to reports of sogginess, so I added a cream cheese glaze instead. Pumpkin pie like but without the hassle of the crust

Sparkling Punch
Easy and a crowd pleaser. I made it for a bridal shower and it went fast. I just used the lemon slices, and threw in some black berries and marachino cherries for color. Double the recipe and it will still go fast. I did not add the sugar since I added the cherries (juice drained)
