Hearty Sausage and Rice Casserole

Reviewed: Jan. 17, 2012
Very tasty! The only substitution I made was using a box of rice pilaf mix instead of the white and wild rice, since that was all I had on hand. It was very good. The casserole was a little salty, though, which is odd since there is no added salt. Still, I'd definitely try this one again.

Peanut Butter Bars I

Reviewed: Jan. 17, 2012
The taste is good and very reminiscent of a Reese's, but these bars almost too rich to eat. Our family couldn't eat more than one small serving each. The graham crackers seem a bit gritty even when they are finely crushed. I've made other recipes where the PB is melted in with the butter, which makes the crumbs soften and become creamy.

Beef Stew VI

Reviewed: Jan. 22, 2012
Excellent! The only substitution I made was to use beef stock instead of water and buillion, because I don't care for bouillion cubes. The taste was EXCELLENT. The only suggestion I have for next time is to use a few less carrots and another potato or two. IMPORTANT: Add the vegetables no more than 45 minutes before serving. The hour quoted in the recipe is just too long and the potatoes get too soft and sort of dissolved.

As far as popovers go, this is an excellent recipe.

Lemon Dreams

Reviewed: Jan. 22, 2012
The filling is delicious! It's the perfect combination of sweet/tart. I needed to add a bit more cornstarch to set up the filling more. I'm not a big fan of the shortbread crust, but that's just me. I'll change that next time, but the filling is SO GOOD that I'm giving it 5 stars anyway. Oh yeah, the wooden spoon to make indentations pools all the filling in the center. Use your thumb, or the scoop of a rounded teaspoon or melon baller instead.

Beef Noodle Bake

An okay recipe, pretty good but nothing special. Very creamy and rich, a nice addition to the dinner rotation on occasion.

Angel Chicken Pasta

Reviewed: Feb. 2, 2012
I made according to directions, and we all thought the dish was bland. Not BAD, just sort of boring, and the seasonings didn't seem like they went together very well. A couple sprinkles of grated parmesan cheese at the table spiffed it up all right, but I think I'd make something else next time. Sorry.

Snickerdoodles I

Reviewed: Feb. 12, 2012
Changed my rating from 4 to 5 stars after putting a slice of bread in the cookie container overnight! OMG SO GOOD, much better the next day! Very good basic snickerdoodle, just like my grandmother used to make. If you want chewy cookies, BAKE only 7 minutes and remove from the cookie sheet immediately. The cookie will look underdone, but will set up while cooling. The full 10 minutes will guarantee they are crunchy. Still yummy, but hard.

Lemon Lover's Pound Cake

Reviewed: Feb. 20, 2012
Considering the high rating, I expected something better. The lemon flavor was far too mild for something called "lemon lovers". Very bland, texture not too great, definitely not worth the calorie count. We ended up throwing most of it out. The calculations are definitely off. This made a full Bundt pan plus 9 cupcakes!

Ibby's Grasshopper Pie

Reviewed: Mar. 10, 2012
Excellent pie, like my aunt used to make for Thanksgiving every year. If the liquor taste is a bit strong, you can add the creme de menthe to the marshmallow/milk mixture as it heats to cook off a bit of the alcohol. Thanks for a great recipe!

Brooke's Best Bombshell Brownies

Reviewed: Apr. 7, 2012
We're a household of chocoholics. We LOVE nice fudgy brownies, but these are way over-the-top chocolate, something I didn't think was possible. Way too sweet, too... brownies ARE sweet by definition, but these are just too much. My son loved them, but even he could eat just one tiny square and asked me to save the rest for later. Hubby said 'meh'. I've got a giant pan of brownies left over. This has NEVER happened before. Nice try, but far, far overboard. Won't make again, sorry. EDIT: Downgrading from 3 to 2 stars. The next day, the rest of the pan had hardened and got crunchy. Threw it all out.

Roasted Garlic

Reviewed: Apr. 12, 2012
This recipe is great, after the oven is turned up substantially. Excellent with warm Italian bread. NOTE: Do NOT try to shortcut and microwave garlic! It may burst into flames, fill your house with smoke, and ruin your micro. Just...trust me on this.

Lemon Poppy Seed Loaf

Very little lemon flavor, odd texture, and the batter fell. Threw the whole thing out and bought a lemon loaf at the grocery.

MMMMM... Brownies

Reviewed: May 29, 2012
My son the chocoholic thought these brownies were amazing. My husband gave them an 'okay'. I thought they were good. Not great, too thick and clumpy, and most of what I could taste was just the chocolate chips, nothing else. The chocolate also seized awfully after adding it to the liquid mixture. I'll keep looking.

Buffalo Chicken Pasta Salad

Reviewed: Jun. 2, 2012
This salad is DELICIOUS. It warrants all caps, definitely, it's THAT good. I really hate when people make substitutions and rate a recipe that is only remotely like the original, but I admit I had to for this one, because I *loathe* green pepper. I substituted celery instead, but otherwise made according to instructions. I'm taking it to a cookout later today, but the Spousal Unit has already requested a second batch for tomorrow, just for us! Thanks for a GREAT dish. EDIT 5/22/14: I made this salad again a couple more times, but am only now getting around to updating my earlier review. The first few times I made it, I splurged for the the thick bleu cheese dressing found in the produce department (like Marie's). The salad was incredible. Once, though, I used regular bottled stuff I had in my pantry (Ken's) and was disappointed. The thin dressing soaks into the pasta and disappears after a few hours. It's definitely worth the extra money for the hearty - and calorific - dressings! Oh yeah, use Frank's Buffalo Sauce, not the Red Hot. The Red Hot is just heat. Only the Buffalo sauce will give it that authentic flavor.

Blueberry Buckle

Reviewed: Jul. 26, 2012
Delicious cake! I was surprised at how much it rose in the pan. It was huge! And yummy! Wouldn't change a thing. Revised 5/11/13 - made the cake for the second time today, with one minor change. It's not fresh blueberry season, so I used frozen. SAME YUMMY. I just dredged the berries with flour first and had to bake the cake for an additional 20 minutes or so. Still loving this recipe, thanks again! Edit 9/4/14 - I've now lost count of how many times I've made this recipe. It's one of our favorites. My 16-year-old son even learned how to make it and has made it a couple times on his own.

Daria's Slow Cooker Beef Stroganoff

Reviewed: Dec. 9, 2012
This is a very good beef stroganoff recipe. The beef was very tender. I followed the recipe exactly. It was a tiny bit on the bland side, but overall it was pretty good. I'd add a bit more thickener next time, because the sauce was a little runny for my taste. Thanks for the recipe. EDIT: After leftovers tonight, I have to change my original 4-star rating to a 3. I thought it was lacking something. Even with a massive amount of sour cream, I couldn't taste it. Sorry, I'll probably stick to my old standby stovetop recipe next time.

Rum or Bourbon Balls

Reviewed: Dec. 16, 2012
OMG. I just made these rum balls with the intention of letting the flavor mellow for a week and serving on Christmas eve after dinner...but I don't think they are going to last that long. Even with the sharp tang of fresh rum (which, incidentally, I hate and don't drink), these doughy little balls of awesome are to die for. I haven't even sugared them yet. I had a bad moment when the chocolate seized and wouldn't combine with the rum and sugar, but I beat the heck out of it with a wire whisk and saved the day. Thank you, you've made my holiday!

Roasted Garlic

Reviewed: Dec. 19, 2012
*****PLEASE DON'T SHORTCUT AND USE THE MICROWAVE!**** There is a possibility that the oil will ignite the garlic and paper towels and catch your microwave on fire. It's not common, but it DOES happen! I micro'd garlic successfully a few times, but the last time it literally exploded into flames, ruined my microwave, and filled my house with that awful burnt-garlic smell for WEEKS. Although I haven't tried this particular recipe before, I've used others like it. To be fair, I'm still rating 5 stars to avoid downgrading the rating - because roasted garlic is *awesome*.
