Buttermilk Pie IV

Reviewed: Mar. 14, 2014
I made this for 5 of us and no one really liked it. It was really sweet and didn't have a lot of flavor. A few people said it tasted like flan or Pecan Pie without the pecans. We all agreed it would taste better with something tart like lemon in the batter or unsweetened raspberries or strawberries on top. The top also burned which I noticed 5 minutes before the timer went off. Luckily, the burned layer peeled right off. I will not be making it again.

Glazed Corned Beef

Reviewed: Mar. 14, 2014
This was good but I have a different glaze recipe that I have used for years and made a batch of corned beef with this glaze and one with the one I usually make. All 5 of us that ate it liked my usual recipe better.

Diane's Colcannon

Reviewed: Mar. 14, 2014
This was soooo good! I served it for St. Patrick's Day and it was a big hit. The only thing I changed was I used buttermilk instead of milk because my husband and I tried a sample both ways and we both liked the buttermilk in it better.

Three Ingredient Peanut Butter Cookies

Reviewed: Jan. 18, 2014
These are really good! I flattened mine with a fork before I cooked them as others suggested. I also pressed Hersheys Kisses onto half of them right after they came out of the oven. They were amazing! My daughter and I liked them better with the Hersheys Kisses and my husband liked them better without. I will definitely be making these a lot!

Lemon Poppy Seed Bread

Reviewed: Jan. 17, 2014
Very good. We made 2 loaves out of the bread instead of 3. I put the glaze on one and not the other. Everyone liked both of them but some liked the added crunch of the one with the glaze better. I read a bunch of review first and did some things differently according to the reviews. I used real lemons instead of the lemon extract. I put in the juice of 2 lemons and added it to the milk so that the total of the 2 combined was 1 1/2 cups. I used 2 tbs. poppy seeds. For the icing I used the orange juice, some lemon juice and enough powdered sugar to make it the right consistency. I poked holes in the top of the bread on poured it on.

Sweet and Spicy Almonds

Reviewed: Jan. 3, 2014
These are soooo good! I made them for a group of people on New Years Eve and everyone loved them and couldn't stop eating them. The sweetness and the heat were perfect! The only thing I did different was I only added 1 tsp. salt because I didn't have Kosher salt, only sea salt (table salt). I will be making these often!

Cranberry Pistachio Biscotti

Reviewed: Dec. 21, 2013
These were great! My husband, who doesn't like biscotti, said I shouldn't make them (and biscotti is just O.K. to me) but I said I wanted to try them since they got such great reviews. After I did, we both said "Wow! These are great!" and my husband said, "Why did you only make that many?". I only added 1 cup of pistachios because that is all we had. I also added a little less cranberries since I added less pistachios. I will make them that way from now on. I had to cook them the 2nd time for longer because they were still soft. For those saying they didn't like the olive oil flavor in these, light olive oil has no flavor unlike extra virgin olive oil so make sure you only use the light.

Rich and Simple French Onion Soup

Reviewed: Nov. 25, 2013
This was really good! I skipped the wine, used chicken broth and only put in a tbs. of butter. For the cheese I used Jarlsberg. I will make this again soon!

Picadillo de Platano

Reviewed: Oct. 4, 2013
This was great! I used yellow with a lot of black on them plantains and fried them in a cast iron skillet with some oil instead of cooking them in water. I did everything else as is. Yum!

Picadillo

Reviewed: Oct. 4, 2013
This is so good!! I used fresh chopped tomatoes instead of canned and skipped the cayenne for those who don't like spicy food but it would have been great with it. I also chopped the raisins and olives in the food processor to avoid huge bites of them. I also used ground turkey and chicken broth instead of beef. Everyone loved it! It tastes even better the next day!

Country Apple Dumplings

Reviewed: Sep. 28, 2013
This was great! All 5 of us that had it loved it. Mine were not soggy. I simmered the butter, sugar and cinnamon mixture for a long time until it was very thick which may be why it wasn't soggy. I also added a teaspoon of vanilla as some suggested but I am not sure it was needed. I used half white and 1/2 brown sugar. The apples from my tree are sweet so I only did a total of 1 cup of sugar. I also made the crescent roll dough from scratch from this site.

My Mom's Raised Doughnuts

Reviewed: Sep. 20, 2013
This was GREAT! The only thing that I changed was using butter instead of shortening because I don't have shortening and don't use it anyway. I did not sift the flour and it turned out fine. To save time, I let the dough rise for the first rising in an oven preheated to about 120 degrees and then turned off. It only took about 1/2 hour for the first rising. Everyone (there were 5 of us) said it tasted just like a donut shop! I have never made donuts before and was kind of afraid to but now I will make these often. They were perfect!

Tomato Sauce

Reviewed: Sep. 14, 2013
This was great and so easy to make! We had a lot of tomatoes from the garden that we needed use so I decided on this recipe. I made it as is. I crushed the tomatoes in our Vitamix. It was a little spicy from all the black pepper which was perfect for me and my husband but my 9 year old daughter asked me to make it less spicy next time although she loved it too. I will be making this often with all our extra tomatoes!
