Follow-up On GMO Comments

In my last post, I talked a little bit about GMO foods, and hopefully, gave you enough information to spark an interest so you would do more research on your own. The internet has a wealth of information, but we need to analyze multiple sources that include medical studies and journals and others that report factual information. Compare information given and discount any that are promoting products. I agree with Raedwolf (a commenter) that there are a lot of alarmists using scare tactics, but those need to be weeded out. I started the study on GMO foods for a speech that I did in a speech class. Although some of the resources for my information were from the internet, much of the data came from studies that I found in the college library. I also found the results of studies done in other countries that were much more detailed and open than the studies published in the U.S.

Doc Simonson offered some very good comments, and all comments are welcomed. I agree that the BT bacteria itself isn't in the GMO foods that it has been blasted into, but some of the DNA of the bacteria is. The whole point of the last blog post was to emphasize the point that the developers of these foods really don't know what parts of the DNA of the two organisms survived the blast and which didn't. So they really can't predict the results of what they are producing. The resulting products are often tested for only 90 days before they are "deemed safe". This really isn't long enough to know what the long-term results of ingestion might be. In depth studies in the U.S. that have found these products to very likely be detrimental have been buried, and, in one case, the scientist was banned from the U.S.

One incident that I read about recently came up in the news, but, of course, most of the information was left out of the news report. I had knowledge of the incident, so I found it interesting how much was left out of the news report. This was about a cattle rancher in Montana that had been losing calves that aborted before birth. He was also having a problem with infertility. The rancher had vets do every test they could think of, but no one could find the cause of the problem. A scientist (I don't remember his name) heard about this and went there with his team to see if they could figure out what was going on. After doing tests and studies on the remains of the dead calves, they found a new organism, that was unknown to science, in the brains of the calves. This rancher's cattle were being fed GMO grain.

In India, BT cotton was endorsed as being more productive than the native cotton. This didn't work well for a couple of reasons. Poor Indian farmers took out loans to buy the miracle cotton seed, but this cotton didn't do well in the climate. So the farmers lost their crops. After the crops were mowed, they let their animals graze on what was left, and half of their animals died. After trying this cotton a second year and losing again, there was a record number of suicide in India caused by farmers that were hopelessly too far in debt. India now bans GMO crops. GMO foods have also been banned in France and the United Kingdom, and all other countries require labeling.

The U.S. is the only country in the world, besides possibly Canada, that does not at least require labeling. We should ask ourselves; If GMO foods are safe and a boon to humanity, why does our government not boast about the accomplishment instead of hiding it from us?; Why are GMO foods not labeled to give us a choice? I think we all know the answer - money and profit. Farmers that buy GMO seeds are prohibited from saving seeds for the next year. They must buy seeds from Monsanto every year and they must buy Roundup Ready, at least for the Roundup Ready GMO crops.

The problem with GMO foods is that these foods are not yet concentrated in our diet as they are for cattle and other grain eating animals. So the effects on us may not show for a number of years. When someone gets one of the diseases that may be caused by GMO, there is no way to trace it. In most cases, many people don't even know what they have been eating. The saddest part of this is that it is affecting children more than most of us. Their growing bodies use everything, including what is bad. For those of us that are older, we grew up before GMO was a part of food. For us, it is more like small doses of arsenic. It won't kill us immediately, but it will have its long-term effects.

I thought I might also mention that buying organic foods does not necessarily mean that you are avoiding GMO foods. Organic means that foods are grown without pesticides or weed killers. GMO foods by nature do not require either. So GMO foods can be certified organic. Really, though, we have more to think about than GMO foods. GMO is only a contributing factor to what is happening to the foods that we eat. I will get into more of this in the next post.

Dr. Don Huber is the scientist that I couldn't remember the name of. He was a professor at Purdue University.

This is an interview with Dr. Huber that I found. It is very interesting and gives an in-depth explanation of how glyphosate works, what it does, and how Roundup Ready GM plants affect us, animals, and the balance of the environment and the gut. It is very long and he talks about the unknown organism toward the end of the interview.<
If nothing else, this information indicates that more testing should be done on GM products before they are released to the general public for testing.

Hi Judy! I'm going to jump in and out I think due to time constraints today. First, thanks for doing so much research. One thing I would suggest is that when making a statement like, " one case, the scientist was banned from the US," it would be really helpful to cite a reference. It is very dramatic, and it doesn't tell us why he was banned, but leaves us assuming that it was his view that got him banned. I'm not saying that isn't the case, just that it is hearsay until proven. Again citations would be nice. As it stands, what you have written doesn't show causality. What you've written leads people into the conclusion that eating GMO grain caused a new life form to spontaneously generate in cattle. That I would be willing to bet isn't what you meant to lead people to conclude, and I'm also willing to bet that it isn't what happened. Incidentally, I could legitimately refer to myself as a scientist. I have a BS in Microbiology and Biochemistry, and I worked in a medical lab when I was younger. I am not in practice a scientist. I am always skeptical of people who are referred to as scientists because of that. They may or may not really be working scientists. They might also be really bad scientists. We are in an age where it can be shown that scientists are not always above their biases. The email scandal regarding climate change shows how scientists can allow their passions or politics to override the scientific method.

Gossypol, a toxic compound found in Cotton plants is poisonous to many animals causing a them to loos weight and die. Some animals are more resistant than others. Could this have been the cause of the animals dying off, not the fact that it was GM?

Hi Doc Simonson, I added reference articles to my blog post. I think you will find the last one interesting. It's an interview with Dr. Huber that includes an in-depth explanation about Glyphosate and the Roundup Ready GM crops. Toward the end of it, he talks about the unknown organism that I mentioned in my post. Dr. Huber is the same scientist that had been discredited and banned after doing research for the FDA a number of years ago. I may have found this article in the college library when I did my initial research. I graduated, so I don't think I have access to the libraries any more.

Hi Judy! I've managed to read through the first two links. Haven't looked up anything from the first one because they didn't cite anything, but Google is your friend. This link: Had citations, but none of them were from a .edu source, and all of them were sources that have a strong anti-GMO slant anyway. They may be right, or they may be totally biased. Apparently, Monarch butterflies are safe for now:

The problem with some of the government sites is that they either mask or completely hide the truth. You should listen to the interview with Don Huber that is in the last link. It's very scientific and based on not only his research and findings, but those of other independent researchers. Try to listen to it all the way to the end. There are also plenty of citings on the page. Something that he mentions may also be the reason that you are unlikely to find such research findings on a .edu site.

i read your blog about gmo foods judy, as i am interested in the ongoing and future effects that can come from them. i also read the comments. i see that by your last entry you seened to be growing weary of having to defend your research and of the "know-it-all" dismissive attitude of one of the bloggers towards what appears to be a lot of heartfelt research done by you. get used to it. he's a "jack of all trades" but a "master st none", except he doesn't think so. he will never miss an opportunity to correct whatever anyone says because he is more right about any and all subjects. i notice he hasn't been back to comment since your last entry. i'm guessing because he couldn't be bothered to read something he has convinced himself he knows more about, while at the same time trying to make you feel as if you weren't thorough enough in your research. i thought you to be very informative. anyone who reads your blog is free to follow-up with their own research if they so chose.

ps. and after reading all your blogs, i think you were bullied by naysayers who would rather stuff in their faces than take the time to find out exactly what they are stuffing in their faces, and then wonder why they are fat, and in poor health. by the way, "hi-jacking" blogs is one of his specialties. also, you being compared to internet scaremongers was ridiculous. the guy who said that insufferable too. good luck.

Patty, Thank you so much for your comments. I have to admit that I was discouraged by having to defend all of my research. I guess I should get used to people that are negative about everything. I am not one to believe everything I hear, and tend to do a lot of research to compare and separate information that is good and bad. For example, there has been a recent scare about arsenic in brown rice. Yes, there is arsenic in brown rice, but there are two kinds of arsenic - organic and inorganic. Organic arsenic is normally occurring in nature, and passes through our digestive system with no consequence. Inorganic arsenic is actually digested and can be harmful. Since any rice is grown in water, the amount of inorganic arsenic absorbed by the rice depends on the water it is grown in. Some countries have more inorganic arsenic in their water than others. So you just need to know where the rice you buy was grown. Believe me, I am not a fear-monger. I am just a person that wants to protect the health of myself and my family. My hope with this blog is to pass the information that I find on to other people, and they can take it for what it is worth. Doc Simonson wants references to .gov and .edu sites, but I trust them the least. Our government is sadly covering up what they are doing to our food, and drugs, more than any other country. I really do appreciate your words of support. Thanks so much.

hi judy, your welcome. i wish people would look at the correlation between the deregulation of the U S food industry by no other than george w bush and the increase in cases of salmonella and e coli since the deregulations were instituted. i think that alone speaks volumes as to where the government's head is at when it comes to food safety and what they are selling the public. and i wholeheartedly agree with your assessment of .edu and .gov sites. they are nothing more than "doctored" studies put out there to keep the public buying what they are selling; and that goes for more than just the food industry.

About Me
I breed large parrots, like to write, raise most of our veggies, completed my AS degree at 65, enjoy cooking specialty dishes and baking bread. I have done extensive study of cooking and eating healthy. A few years ago, I started researching healthy eating for my parrots, and it has since changed focus to the diet of my family. At this point, I make all of our bread using fresh milled flour that I make. We eat primarily pastures fed meats and eggs, and I make many of our condiments. We also avoid GMO foods and ingredients as much as possible. Since my 93 year old mother has moved in with us, we have eliminated the 10 medications she was on, and her physical and mental condition has improved considerably. I totally believe that we are what we eat. What is really best for us is a constant learning experience.

I get bored with cooking daily meals, but enjoy making specialty and new dishes. I also enjoy baking breads from scratch using freshly ground flour made from various grains that I buy in bulk.
My cooking triumphs
One of my cooking triumphs was baking whole grain breads that are light, tasty, and healthy.
My cooking tragedies
My latest cooking tragedy was recovered with some effort. I made the Navy Bean and Ham soup that I posted and after the cooking time, much of the liquid had evaporated. I was tired when it finished and put it into containers and froze it as it was. The next day we had it for dinner and it was way too thick. As much as I didn't feel like it, I thawed 8 containers of the soup, added more broth, and repackaged it for freezing. It was really a pain, but I'm glad I did it. The finished soup was so much better.
