German Twists

Reviewed: Dec. 14, 2014
I received this recipe over 40 years ago from my lifelong friend's mom who is now 85 years old. It came from her mom, who brought it with her from Sweden. It is spectacular and is part of Christmas for me. Her version split the butter into half butter/half shortening (I think because in the 1970s butter was very expensive). I will think of her everytime I make these at Christmas, as will my children.

Cheddar Bay Biscuits

Reviewed: Nov. 30, 2014
Given the ratings of others, I expected more and was disappointed. Good, not great. I did get compliments from others. It wasn't worth the effort for Thanksgiving with so many other good foods. I likely won't make these again.

Turkey Tetrazzini II

Reviewed: Nov. 30, 2014
This was excellent and the whole family liked it. I used half and half instead of milk (ok... I know it isn't as healthy but I bought the Costco half gallon for the holiday). I also added the sauteed onions, celery, garlic and mushrooms. I used penne instead of spaghetti and grated parm instead of shredded. Great use of leftover turkey.

Thanksgiving Leftovers Casserole

Reviewed: Nov. 30, 2014
This was very good. I had leftover stuffing which I used but didn't know what quantity was the equivalent of a boxed mix. As a result, I didn't use enough stuffing which would have made it even better. I should have used a solid one inch base packed down. Four stars was for the mayo. The dish was good and the family liked it but I didn't care for the obvious mayo taste. Next time (and there will be a next time) I will sub cream of mushroom, celery or chicken instead of mayo.

Slow Cooker Pulled Pork

Reviewed: Jul. 6, 2014
I served this for a 'Grads and Dads' event a couple of weeks ago. Instead of tenderloin, I used pork shoulder purchased from Costco. If you haven't purchased it there previously, start now. It was a spectacular piece of pork; much less fat than what you get at the grocery store. I assumed about 4 lbs of shoulder to substitute for 2 lbs of tenderloin. Otherwise, I used the recipe as stated, and thoroughly drained the fat when cooking was complete. I had to do one in the crock pot and the other in the oven. No difference except how long it took (oven was faster). Then I used bottled BBQ sauce (Kraft... was on sale). I got raves from my guests. I froze the leftovers in baggies and took one of the bags on our boat trip for July 4th. The encore performance was also easy and wonderful.

Orzo and Tomato Salad with Feta Cheese

Reviewed: Jul. 6, 2014
Ok, I'm a "regular" on All Recipes and have used many recipes with great success. My family found the flavor lacking. When I asked my family about what to do with the recipe the answer was "toss it".

Slow-Cooker Pepper Steak

Reviewed: Jun. 22, 2014
I have made this recipe several times and it is spectacular. Meat is fall apart tender, very flavorful, and excellent with rice or pasta. It is easy - I often make around noon on a Sunday and everyone comments about how great it smells all day. This recipe is a winner!

Fresh Strawberry Upside Down Cake

Reviewed: May 18, 2014
After reading the reviews I had very high expectations. After making it, I agree it was good but not great. It doesn't exactly have great visual presentation either. I followed many of the suggestions for adjustment and was glad I did. I will keep the recipe but not as a family favorite.

Famous Pork Chops

Reviewed: Mar. 9, 2013
This recipe was excellent. Like others, I pan fried it on each side for 4-5 minutes to get a bit of crispness to the breading and then baked it. I also cut the butter in half and took the foil off when I turned the chops. It was excellent - even my daughter who groans when we have pork chops said it was great. I served it with saffron rice and broccoli. I followed guidance of other raters.
