Panettone II

Reviewed: Nov. 30, 2005
This my second year making this recipe. My old fashioned Italian parents loved it. It just needs a little tweeking. At my mothers suggestion, I substituted a product called "vanillina" powder for the vanilla extract. This is available in small packets and you will need 3 or 4 of them. This will produce the missing "aroma" that was mentioned in a previous review. It does rise too high in the machine so I always pull off a lump after the second rise ( a bit smaller than a tennis ball) and discard it or bake it in the oven as a small bun. I used dried (or candied) mixed peel as the fruit along with some golden raisins. This is what you often find in store bought panettone

Tea Biscuits

This is an awesome recipe. It adapts well to additions like raisins, cheese etc. I use 1/4 cut of shortening and 1/4 cut of solid block type margarine (NOT spreadable soft tub kind) and they puffed to incredible proportions. One note to those who do not work well with pastry, less is more when it comes to mixing.

Rosemary Turkey Meatloaf

Reviewed: Jun. 11, 2003
Most of the recipes from this website turn out fabulous. Not so with this one. I had the chance to eat dinner before my husband came home so I was able to spare him the "yuck" factor. Disposed of it and made him an omelet in a hurry.

Spinach Cheese Ball

Reviewed: Apr. 27, 2011
Great recipe. It made a lot. Next time instead of one large ball I would form it into 2 smaller, more manageable ones.

Chocolate Trifle

Reviewed: Mar. 15, 2008
Very rich and sweet so a small serving is all most can really handle. I topped the brownies in the second layer with some dulce de leche sauce which made it even sweeter. Not a good idea and I won't do that next time. I would love to try this with a nice, dark cake mix like devils food instead of the brownies. This would make it more like a trifle. I will also be putting a layer of cherry pie filling in between so it is more like a Black forest version.

Eccles Cakes

I made these as a gift for some British friends and they raved about them. Saved a couple for me and my husband and they were delicious.

Chicken Hurry

Reviewed: May 10, 2011
Followed ingredients exactly but instead of baking this, as per the instructions, I slowly sauteed it in a pan on the stovetop covered with a lid for 20 minutes and then uncovered for 10 minutes more to thicken the sauce (watching carefully so the sauce would not scorch). I was using boneless, skinless thighs flattened out so cooking time was less. Excellent served on rice.

Sweet Party Mix

Reviewed: Aug. 24, 2004
I took this to my in-laws as a snack before a dinner party and we had to remove it from the table before everyone filled up on it and didn't have room for dinner! My sister-in-law took a leftover bag of it to work as did I and the word from her office was "this stuff rocks" and from mine there was much begging for more. Who would think 6 simple ingredients could combine to make such an amazing snack mix! I used Crispix as it is rice on one side and corn on the other.

Oatmeal Pancakes II

These were delightful. So tasty and light. i did not add as much salt because the amounts of baking powder and soda give it enough of that salt like edge already.

Brown Sugar Pie II

Reviewed: May 11, 2009
This was super sweet (which you would expect from something called a sugar pie). Was the filling supposed to be runny? Not a problem. We ate it anyways. Hope a night in the refrigerator tightens it up. We topped it with whipped cream. I'd like to try this again with the addition of raisins or currants.

Sloppy Joes II

Reviewed: Jul. 7, 2008
This has become a regular on our meal roster since I found it here. I can almost make it without reading the recipe. It's great and can be cooked ahead and easily reheated on those days when we are working and want something ready as soon as we come in the door. Try it on a variety of breads and buns to make it different every time. Tonight I am serving it on split onion buns.

Mashed Potato, Rutabaga, and Parsnip Casserole with Caramelized Onions

Reviewed: Oct. 5, 2013
Excellent! Made it exactly as stated. Only change I would make is not to cook the onions too brown as they will burn when baking. Leave them a bit pale and they will brown up in the oven. I might make this as a side dish for Thanksgiving this year.

Molasses Cake

Reviewed: Feb. 2, 2013
Smelled wonderful while baking. Rose beautifully. Disappointed with loose texture and despite being well wrapped, it was dry and crumbly next day. I suspect the lack of butter is the cause. It may have brought out the flavor as well. We tried dressing it up with cream and raspberry jam to no avail. Would not make again.

Excellent recipe. So moist. I followed this to the letter and we were thrilled with the results. My husband does WWII models and games and wants me to make a batch for his game night next week.

Dog Treats I

Reviewed: Aug. 1, 2014
Our dog eats 2 of these for his breakfast every day. I have occasionally used peanut butter instead of cheese and they are great (you may have to add a bit more flour in this case). I eat one occasionally as they taste that good!

Buttertart Squares

Reviewed: Jun. 4, 2013
I made these exactly as per the recipe instructions. I wondered how such a simple recipe could garner such rave reviews. Then I cut a small square out of the corner while it cooled on the counter. I literally stopped dead in my tracks as I chewed and walked across the room. The flavor was heaven. I was amazed. Hope there are some left by tomorrow for the ladies at my seniors ceramic class.

Loved this! I had green stuffed olives but they added a bit of zing. Also increased the garlic to 4 cloves just because I love it. I will be making this my go-to spaghetti squash recipe from now on.Garnished with red pepper flakes....so yummy and simple to prepare.

Cranberry Orange Oatmeal Cookies

Reviewed: Mar. 18, 2013
The first time I made these they hardly spread, which was great. Today I made them again and they flattened into round cookies. They still taste the same but I am wondering which result is the expected one.
