I had a pretty rough weekend.  I had treatment on Friday and I didn't feel well at all, couldn't eat much, couldn't sleep and had joint pain in my hips, knees, legs like none other.  My doctor says he can give me Valium for it, but I just don't think that's going to cut it... seriously Valium? MORE

About this Cook
I love to travel above all else and have enjoyed the time we were able to spend in Europe - especially Italy - eating and drinking wine at little trattorias located off the beaten path. I am now unemployed, after working for 30+ years of my life, it's a new experience. I've been focusing on cooking, sewing - looking to vastly improve those old "home ec" things I learned in junior high. In addition, I collect and LOVE to read cookbooks - especially those featuring the history of food, cooking techniques and certain dishes. Reading a good cookbook is like reading a good novel to me!
My favorite things to cook
Pasta dishes, BBQ, salads - any kind, soups, stews and chowders.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My Mom taught me how to make donuts when I was about eight years old. It was one of my favorite ways to spend time with her.
My cooking triumphs
My Lasagna, Spaghetti Pie, Corn Chowder, Clam Chowder, Pork Green Chili Burritos, Baked Ziti, any Roasted Chicken or Turkey.
My cooking tragedies
Potato Leek Gratin - wow, what a disaster! My cheese separated and my potatoes never fully cooked.

Irish Beef Stew with Guinness(R) Beer
Made the way te recipe is written using carrots and potatoes - yields a very tasty beef stew which I thicken with a little flour and water, if needed.

Molly's Mouthwatering Tzatziki Cucumber Sauce
Made this as written and it was pretty good. I halved the recipe and used only one heaping teaspoon of mayo. It was good, but lacked the depth I was looking for, so I added the juice of 1/2 lemon and finely grated the peel - then added 1/4t. crushed seasoning called "Deliciously Dill" (dried mix of onion, dill, lemon peel, ginger, garlic, chives) and it was perfect. Thanks for the recipe! I was looking for something authentic and this is as close as I found. Not 100% on the mayo yet though, but we'll see after another night in the fridge.

The Best Meatballs
As written, very good. However, it is hard (for whatever reason) to get veal here anymore - a package of veal culets was $30 at my supermarket last week! I bought some gound veal at my local meat market ($8 per lb.) and made these. Unfortunately, didn't feel it was worth the extra time and expense. Next time, I'm going to try them with 1/2 ground pork and a 80% ground beef to keep it moist and leave out the veal - unless the price comes WAY down.
