I've made exactly one Thanksgiving dinner in my life.  My parents are long gone and my siblings all have Thanksgiving with their children and grandchildren.  My kids are away from home and usually are working on Thanksgiving Day.  DH and I make our annual trip about 1 hour away to his uncle… MORE

I think if I had to be restricted to making only one thing from scratch for the rest of my life, it would be bread.  It truly is my favorite thing to bake.  It follows that I love to eat bread too.  One thing I've never been able to master is a good sourdough bread.  I've tried repeatedly to… MORE

My parents never made a big deal about Halloween and we lived in a remote area where we got no trick-or-treaters.  So I never understood people going all out for this "holiday".  When my kids were little I made more effort and even made most of their costumes.  The kids are grown now and out… MORE

Right now it is Sunday August 5, 2012 at nearly 9 a.m.  I am alone in my home (well with my two cats) as both my DH and DD are out working today.  This may be the last time in a while that my life will be quiet because a hurricane is about to blow in.  Not a literal hurricane but by this time… MORE

My mother always made applesauce in the early days of Summer using what she always called June apples.  My mother's applesauce was prized by my whole family but I guess I just assumed everyone's family had homemade applesauce.  It wasn't until after my mother was gone that I realized there… MORE

No this has nothing to do with food, unless we're talking cat food.  I cannot remember a time in my life except when I lived in a dorm at college when I did not have a cat in my life.  Even then, I had a cat at home and I would yell his name out first thing when I came in the door for a… MORE

But I sure am glad we found each other.  I've mentioned my mother's cooking in other blogs.  One thing is for sure, we never had anything even remotely Mexican in her house.  I remember having my first encounter with Taco Bell in 1985.  I know some will argue that Taco Bell is not Mexican… MORE

If you haven't figured it out yet, one of the assignments for the AR Brand Ambassadors this month was to blog about a memory associated with butter.  Most people seem to have warm fuzzy memories with their grandparents and butter.  I don't.  Some people have warm fuzzy memories with their… MORE

I find myself more and more these days asking that question.  Every time I go to the doctor, I hear "It's normal for your age."  My tastes in food are changing.  I live for the nights when I actually can sleep through a decent number of hours without my feet hitting the floor (you know what I… MORE

About Me
I'm so glad to have the time to cook and bake again although I've got fewer to cook for now! Luckily DH's work cohorts love my food!
My favorite things to cook
I have rediscovered my love for cooking and baking now that I have time to do it again. I especially love making breads and rolls but have also tried to expand my horizons with savory items. I am a notorious carb-aholic.
My favorite family cooking traditions
We always had the tradition of pork and sauerkraut on New Years Day for luck. I always make Monkey Bread on Christmas morning (the kind with butterscotch pudding and frozen rolls). I try to make a nice somewhat fancy dinner for whatever family is available on Christmas Eve before church services.
My cooking triumphs
My one and only attempt at Thanksgiving dinner for the entire family went well.
My cooking tragedies
I really have no "tragedies" but I cannot get the hang of homemade biscuits.
