Playgroup Granola Bars

Reviewed: Oct. 7, 2013
These are not at all what I hoped. They are like a dry lifeless oatmeal cookie. I'll keep looking for something that is more like a real granola bar.

Juicy Peach Crisp

Reviewed: Sep. 11, 2012
I cut the white sugar in half and it was still a little sweet for our tastes. Other than that this was delicious! Tasted like shortbread on peaches. I sprinkled the cinnamon directly on the peaces.

Peach Crisp III

Reviewed: Aug. 24, 2011
This is the best crisp I've made in recent memory. Actually crispy, with a nice blend of spices. I didn't follow the method quite as written, but I'm pretty sure as written it is also worth 5 stars. What I did: I used a full cup of granola in place of the granola, oats and pecans, since mine has nuts and is not as sweet as the boxed kind. I combined all of the flour, the sugar, butter and spices in the food processor until crumbly and then stirred a few big spoonfuls (1/2 cup?) into the peaches before pouring the peaches in the pan. I combined the remaining sugar mixture with one cup of granola and sprinkled it over the top. Came out great!

Mom's Zucchini Bread

Reviewed: Jul. 19, 2011
I'm rating this five stars because even though I made a few changes, I think this is a five star recipe regardless. I followed MommyinSeattle's suggestion to increase the zucchini to 3 cups and reduce the sugar to 2 cups. Still a little sweet for our tastes, but delicious, with a really nice texture. Also used white whole wheat for one of the cups of flour and added a couple tablespoons of ground flax. Don't skip the walnuts, between those and the flax, you'll get some good omega3's in there!

Exquisite Pizza Sauce

Reviewed: Jul. 3, 2011
This is great pizza sauce! It is easy to make because you don't have to cook it, yet still very flavorful. Five stars with half the honey and a little fennel seed. For us this makes enough for about six 12-inch pizzas. I store it in a jar in the fridge.

French Toast Casserole

Reviewed: Jan. 17, 2011
This is just what I was looking for. I made it before bed (and sprinkled a handful of frozen blueberries in it) and had my husband put it in the oven when he got up. Very good. Just the right size for two adults a four year old and a 23 month old.

Pumpkin-Apple Muffins with Streusel Topping

Reviewed: Oct. 22, 2010
Not great. As written these muffins are way too sweet and not pumpkin-y enough. The baking time is too long. It's not a bad recipe in that it could be tweaked to yield something more satisfying, but as written, I can only give it three (maybe four) stars. Still on the hunt for that perfect soft, spicy, pumpkin-y muffin recipe.

Chicken Marsala

Reviewed: Mar. 26, 2010
This was pretty good, but not nice Italian restaurant good. Will make again. My chicken came out a little bit slimy, perhaps because my oil and butter was not hot enough for fear of burning the butter. I think I'll brown them in just olive oil next time and add the butter to the sauce after truly browning the chicken.

Asian Carryout Noodles

Reviewed: Mar. 16, 2010
Very good! I made this as a side to go with my toasted sesame chicken cakes, so omitted the chicken. Needs more oil, I'd double it. Also, I agree with others that it needs more veggies. I used finely cut broccoli and cabbage and shredded carrots.

Chocolate Peanut Butter Bars III

Reviewed: Mar. 6, 2010
I agree with other reviewers that the proportions were all wrong in this recipe for a 9x13 pan, and there was just too much peanut butter filling overall. So sweet and rich you couldn't even taste the cookie crust. Not for us. I think I'd do better with a peanut butter swirled brownie.

Serbian Ground Beef, Veggie, and Potato Bake

Reviewed: Feb. 28, 2010
I was surprised that I found this a little bit boring based on the reviews here. I wasn't really impressed with it for dinner, but then discovered it would make an excellent breakfast dish, served alongside some eggs and maybe muffins. Needs a few more potatoes too.

World's Best Lasagna

Reviewed: Nov. 17, 2009
Perfect! I prefer more noodles, so I added enough to divide the ingredients into another layer than the instructions state. Also be careful with the salt, add it to the sauce to your taste. Others have said this sauce is great for all kinds of things - I agree.

Basic Corn Muffins

Reviewed: Nov. 7, 2009
I'm surprised I haven't reviewed this one yet. This has become my standard go-to recipe for corn muffins. Great as written, but I usually use buttermilk to give them an even nicer rise. The other night I added a can of cream style corn and reduced the sugar to 2 T. and the milk to 1/2 cup. Baked it in an 8 inch pan and it came out kind of like a cross between cornbread and corn pudding. It was a nice change. But again, this recipe is great as written.

Spinach Bacon Quiche

Reviewed: Nov. 7, 2009
Pretty good. I made this as written and found what others did - that it was too watery with 2 cups of milk. Probably chilled it will be fine, but it's too soupy in the middle when eaten warm. Since I found this recipe a little too heavy on the spinach and prefer quiche with some or all swiss cheese, I think I'll try other recipes rather than fiddling with this one.

Sticky Chicken

Reviewed: Jan. 9, 2009
Not really very memorable. I liked the idea of being able to use frozen chicken and an easy sauce, but there are really better things to do with your chicken that are just as easy. Probably won't be making this again.

Apple Squares

Reviewed: Nov. 15, 2008
Very good, but they could be improved with more apples, like other reviewers have suggested. A LOT more apples. Next time I'll more than double the amount. I skipped the sugar on top iced them with old fashioned caramel icing. Then I garnished with pecans and called them caramel apple squares for a bake sale. They were a hit.

Baked Teriyaki Chicken

Reviewed: Nov. 10, 2008
Good! I marinated it for about 4 or 5 hours before baking it and I'm glad I did. Since I used skinned chicken quarters that tend to be greasy, I put them on a rack above a cookie sheet to let the fat drip off, and only turned them once. The only complaint I have is that it splattered all over in the oven and made a good bit of smoke, probably because of the high temperature.

Spanish Rice Bake

Reviewed: Oct. 2, 2008
Pretty good, but I thought it was too sweet. I think I'll try it again using salsa rather than chile sauce as some reviewers have done and omitting the sugar.

Best Cream Of Broccoli Soup

Reviewed: Sep. 18, 2008
Great! This is not one of those heavy, paste-y "cream of" soups, but was just the right thickness. The flavor is simple, but really good - fresh broccoli really makes it shine. I served it sprinkled with some grated cheese. Don't expect this to be a main dish soup because it is light.

Salisbury Steak

Reviewed: Sep. 18, 2008
I don't like to be a naysayer, but I expected much better based on the reviews to this recipe. We just weren't impressed. The sauce was too ketchup-y and other than that lacked any real flavor. Would have been much better with some kind of mushroom sauce. I think I'll just throw away the yucky sauce and break up the leftover meat into meat sauce or vegetable soup. Updated to add: I tried Rachael Ray's recipe on the Food Network site and it is wonderful. Try that one instead of this.
