A Fun Fantastic 4th!

The 4th of July is definitely one of my favorite holidays.  We celebrate almost every year at a potluck where everyone brings their own meat to grill and a side dish to share.  This year my friend made several great burger toppings/salsas.  What a beautiful, eye catching display they made!

We also decided to give a new recipe a try.  We thought Savory Beefy Burgers by Bird’s Eye - http://allrecipes.com/recipe/savory-beefy-burgers/detail.aspx< would be an excellent grilling recipe.  I was disappointed with the recipe when the burgers broke up and almost totally fell apart on the grill.  I felt perhaps a binder, like an egg, would have helped to hold together the burgers better.

Hubby had a cheddar burger.

I had a caprese burger – fresh mozzarella, basil, and tomato.  Despite the falling apart burger it was yummy.

We had a chip table, chipotle butter for the grilled corn, and fresh watermelon, cut up with the awesome new watermelon slicer – it looks a lot like an apple slicer, but big enough for a watermelon.  We finished the day with fireworks.  All in all it was a fun and patriotic 4th.

Until next time. . .

MAB: Looks like you enjoyed the holiday celebration. I struggle with making hamburgers; I am never satisfied with them. The watermelon slicer you mentioned is intriguing. I was quite entertained checking them out on the internet.

bikerfamily - Burgers can indeed be tricky, I think I'll fiddle with this recipe a little, I like the idea of having onions and garlic on the inside of the burger, but there were too many for this to hold together. Fewer veggies, and maybe an egg to bind will be my next experiment. And the watermelon slicer is like a dream come true! Thanks for reading!

Thanks for the info on watermelon slicers, the one in the picture belongs to a friend of mine, so your info is appreciated, I didn't think to ask her where she got it! I think it's the coolest thing since sliced bread! Thanks for reading, and I'm glad you enjoyed it!

About Me
About the ONLY thing I don't like about cooking is the HEAT!! I'm not sure why, but I get very easily overheated. I usually sit while cooking, and have a fan blowing directly on me if available. I've been thinking about renaming myself - thehotchef - lol. It's a little better in winter, but I live in Albuquerque, NM - it never gets REALLY cold here, and my body just seems to want to overheat when I get busy in the kitchen! That's one of the reasons I like to divide my kitchen work into 2 or 3 parts at a time. One day I chop the veggies, the next day I roast the veggies, and the 3rd day I put together the lasagna and bake, for example.
My favorite things to cook
Bread, black bottom banana cream pie, fruit salad, beef stroganoff. I like to try something new for Thanksgiving every year.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Mom's tea ring, macoroni/potato salad, bread, BRINING the Thanksgiving turkey.
My cooking triumphs
Best pies ever!
My cooking tragedies
My husband likes his own cooking better than mine! So much so that he is willing to make dinner for our family everyday - that's just fine with me!
