Ancient Roman Cheesecake (Savillum)

Reviewed: Apr. 12, 2010
Use a smaller springform than the 10" indicated in the recipe, which might also bring the baking time up to 35 minutes. I'd recommend a layer of parchment paper since the bay leaves easily move and if any part of the cheese cake is brown it sticks. The taste was okay; even with half the bay leaves (mine are really strong), their flavor overwhelmed the delicate orange and honey flavors, which had made the batter taste so promising. Far from being a disaster, but not a repeat recipe for me.

Apple Oatmeal Cookies II

Reviewed: Apr. 5, 2010
This is a cake-y, moist cookie with a delicate honey taste (used a mild, clover honey) - not very sweet. I cut a large apple just smaller than chocolate chip size, and there was barely enough dough to bind everything together. The addition of ground cloves, ginger, and nutmeg to my second batch was nice. My cookies were just over 1 Tbsp. big, yielding 3 dozen, and baked in about 8 minutes. The kitchen smelled so good! On an absolute scale of cookies, it's a 3 1/2 star recipe (I'd like cookies to be crisper and more caramelized). As a healthy, naturally sweetened snack, it's really yummy.

Barbie's Tuna Salad

Reviewed: Mar. 13, 2010
A fresh take on tuna salad! I used a little finely chopped onion instead of the onion flakes and added spices to taste. Worth making again.

Bavarian Apple Torte

Reviewed: Nov. 16, 2009
It's a nice recipe, and not too sweet with the full amount of sugar. The presentation was pretty. If I were to make it again, I'd thinly slice or chop most of the apple, mix that into the cheese mixture, reserve enough thin apple slices to make an attractive pattern on top, and dot it with butter. My 10" springform pan baked in about 1 hour.

Awesome Eggplant Rollatine

Reviewed: Nov. 15, 2009
A great recipe! I made a few changes based on other reviewers' tips. For the eggplant, just an egg wash followed by a Parmesan, herb, garlic, and flour mixture. Although I fried the eggplant this time, next time I'd infuse some olive oil with garlic and herbs, lightly coat the eggplant, and roast the slices to make it healthier. The eggplant flavor was muted. I used one large eggplant (cut 3/16" thick, lengthwise), 2 eggs in egg wash, the full recipe of filling, and homemade sauce. It is time and labor intensive, but no more than expected for a recipe like this. Certainly, I'd recommend trying it and customizing it to your tastes.

Ghoraiybah

Reviewed: Sep. 21, 2009
I followed the recipe, grinding my own cardamom and leaving off the almonds. This isn't a sweet cookie, but it's great with tea or coffee - crispy, light, and nicely spiced. A cookie press makes for a very pretty presentation. Next time I'll add some rosewater or orange blossom water.

Cocoa Oatmeal Cookies

Reviewed: Sep. 21, 2009
I overbaked the cookies a little bit, but they still tasted good, chewy and chocolate-y. Not a fan of the raisins, though. They'd be great with chocolate or peanut butter chips, a few tablespoons of peanut butter, and/or some coconut.

Tahini Cookies

Reviewed: Sep. 8, 2009
They're good as a healthy alternative to traditional cookies, but they were a little bland and crumbly. I substituted agave nectar for the honey, and that flavor reduced but didn't eliminate the bitterness of the tahini. Raisins, chopped apples, dried currants, etc. would be good additions.

Slow Cooker Carnitas

Reviewed: Dec. 4, 2008
As per other reviewers' recommendations, I tripled all spices except the cinnamon. Flavor didn't permeate well the meat; the coriander was too strong. Although low sodium, the broth was inedible with the recipe's 1 tsp. of salt. The only other change I made was to trim and to cut the pork into smaller pieces (to cook faster). The meat was tender and moist - just not that yummy.

Never Fail Applesauce Spice Cake

Reviewed: Oct. 8, 2008
The cake was moist and tender but not that apple-y. The butter didn't blend well with the applesauce. If I were to use this recipe again, I'd stick to my intuition: beat the butter and sugar a few minutes (to aerate), beat in the eggs, stir in applesauce and buttermilk, and fold in the dry ingredients.

Vegan Brownies

Reviewed: Jan. 19, 2008
I made a third the recipe and baked it for 20 minutes. The flavor wasn't very chocolaty. Pieces tended to separate into top and bottom halves without being crumbly. There was no oiliness. The top tasted great. Overall, comparable to non-vegan brownies but not the best.

Crema de Calabazines

Reviewed: Jul. 30, 2006
I liked this soup a lot, very rich and creamy. I used shredded sharp cheddar, which gave the soup a really pretty golden color. It would probably taste great with crumbled bacon or parsley to garnish it.

Cilantro Chicken Salad

Reviewed: Jul. 30, 2006
A light, summery recipe. I didn't pay attention to the directions and put the lime zest into the salad, but it tasted great.

Roasted Chickpeas

Reviewed: Apr. 15, 2006
I've tried this recipe a couple of times with different seasonings; my favorite is with a curry-type blend of spices. They're done when the color has darkened, and the beans have shrunk - about 30 min for me.

Spicy Indian Dahl

Reviewed: Nov. 7, 2004
Fantastic taste! The finished dish has lovely color. I had to substitute for what was on hand. I used old style mustard (with whole seeds), a pinch of garam masala (no jalapenos), and canned tomatos. I also omitted the fresh cilantro, and it still came out great. Yummy with whole wheat pitas.

My Own Famous Stuffed Grape Leaves

Fabulous recipe! A couple of changes: veggie broth instead of chicken, dried herbs (adjusyed quantities), a little parsley, and grape leaves from a jar. It came out awesome.
