This will be MY split pea soup recipe forever. I have made split pea soup many times, but this is the KEEPER recipe. I started out with a ham bone and simmered it with the split peas, ham, chicken broth, water, and bay leaf while I chopped and sauteed the vegetables. I used canola oil instead of the butter. I also added chopped carrots and sauteed them with the onion, garlic and celery. Then I added the sauteed vegetables to the ham bone broth. I did cook the split peas and ham bone longer than 1 hour 15 minutes, but total time from start to finish was 2 hours as shown above.
