About this Cook
I am an R.N. for 37 years with a multiple area training and experience but I love my cardiac nursing. My husband and I have a small farmstead that we have converted to our secret gardens. We have all sorts of species of plants and garden feverishly in summer to grow and can, freeze, and dehydrate all our vegies for winter consumption. We are fosters for a local humane society and have a variety of dogs at any given time. We are avid birdwatchers, readers, campers, hikers, swimmers, and woodworkers. We recently refurbished our over 100 year old barn so that it was salvaged and did not have to be torn down. It now serves as workshop for various wood crafts that we do.
My favorite things to cook
I am willing to try anything as long as I know what the ingredients are. I have read many cookbooks with ingredients I had no idea what they were and had to do research before I could even contemplate if I was able to attempt such a feat.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Making, baking, and decorating Gingerbread people at Christmas. Imagine my surprise when my 20 year old son called from college just before his trip home for the holidays to make sure I was not going to make them without him. Who'd have thought a college kid would want to make gingerbread people?
My cooking triumphs
A master at vegetarian and Mediterranean/Greek dishes.
My cooking tragedies
My first batch of biscuits many years ago turned into bullets for the slingshot to keep the squirrel off the bird feeder.

Hungarian Mushroom Soup
Most excellent! I added just a bit of grated aged horseradish cheddar cheese on top of the bowls just before serving that I happened to have and this was absolutely delicious!

Tomatillo Salsa Verde
I had 5 pounds of tomatillos from the garden so I tripled the recipe and this recipe worked great for canning.I did not even have to cook it because they cook in the jars in the pressure canner. Just grind all raw ingredients up together and pour in your jars. Added juice from one lime and 2 TBSP. of red wine vinegar (remember I TRIPLED the original recipe so cut this amount back if you are just making a single amount) and was able to omit the salt. Process 10 minutes at 5 pounds of pressure.

Smoked Paprika Vinaigrette
I made this and put it over fresh black eyed peas, tomatoes, and diced and roasted celery, onion and peppers from the oven. Took it to a family reunion and everyone raved about the dressing and vegie combination. It was so delicious! I did change the red wine vinegar to 1/4 cup each rice vinegar and good sherry. Also left out the diced onions since I had roasted my vegies prior to assembling the salad.
