About this Cook
I love to recreate the comfort foods and desserts of my childhood. My teachers were my grandmothers, who made the best fruit pies, cinnamon rolls, and sugar cookies, and my mother who inspired me with her ability to put delicious food on the table three times a day. I was a caterer for 5 years but now volunteer my services for Wednesday night church dinners. I blog about quilting and recipes at
My favorite things to cook
My favorite things to cook are breads and desserts. I've had great success with recipes from this site, such as Brown Sugar Meatloaf, Blue Cranberry Sauce, Pear Honey Cranberry Sauce, Best Brownies, and Jalapeno Popper Spread.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Fall and winter holiday seasons are my favorite times of the year. Anything involving pumpkin and cinnamon has my attention, and my personal Christmas traditions are Granny's sugar cookies and gooseberry pie, as well as Danish Kringles from a recipe given to me by my junior high home economics teacher.
My cooking triumphs
My greatest compliment is watching people react favorably to the food I have prepared, and especially when my husband says "wow, this is great!"
My cooking tragedies
One Thanksgiving when I was sick (that was my excuse), I forgot to put sugar in the pumpkin pie! My DH put whipped cream on it and ate it anyway.

Golden Potato Soup
Tasted better than anything I've had in a restaurant. I used new potatoes and a great tasting smoked ham - minced instead of chopped. I added a bit of butter and some green onions, and I used Velveeta Queso Blanco shreds for the cheese. Even though my husband prefers my old-fashioned potato soup, this is my new favorite!

Whole Wheat Pumpkin-Applesauce Muffins
I made mini-muffins, added a streusel topping, and took it to a Bible study where they flew out of the basket! Made them with pear puree in place of the pumpkin and applesauce. I also used self-rising flour (left out the baking powder, soda, and salt), cinnamon and nutmeg in place of the pumpkin pie spice, more brown sugar than white, and left off the raisins and pecans. It's great to have a delicious, versatile recipe that allows for substitutions.

Jo-Ann's Power Bars
I modified this recipe but still want to give it a 5-star rating for the inspiration. ;) I used 2 cups of Almond Maple Granola (from this website) to replace the oats and nuts, one tablespoon of canola oil, and added 1/4 cup each natural crunchy peanut butter, chopped dates, cherry Craisins, and 1/2 cup mini chocolate chips. They are a hit with my husband who thinks they taste like oatmeal cookies, and they will provide a nice energy boost for him as a mid-morning snack.
