The Real Mojito

Reviewed: Sep. 20, 2009
I followed the instructions to the letter and it was perfect for my taste. Delicious and refreshing, with the just the right combination of mint and lime. I'm cool as a cucumber as I write this on a searingly hot day thanks to that mojito.

Fatoosh

Reviewed: Jul. 16, 2009
This is delicious and almost exactly like the great fatoosh I get at a local restaurant. I've made this recipe verbatim and it's excellent, but I personally like to add some feta cheese. I omit the pita because I make a big batch and save it, so there's no way to keep it from getting soggy.

Big Soft Ginger Cookies

Reviewed: Mar. 12, 2009
If I could give these 500 stars I would. They were the best tasting cookies I've ever eaten. Just the right combination of spice and sweetness, and with a great soft texture. I substituted 1/2 C butter and 1/4 C applesauce for the margarine, but otherwise left the recipe alone. The dough was sticky but not impossible, and you need to flatten them on the cookie sheet. Also, they needed about 13 minutes in my oven.

World's Best Lasagna

Reviewed: Jan. 21, 2009
I've made this twice over the past year and both times each and every guest said it was the best lasagna they'd ever had. And that was despite the fact that I substituted creamed cauliflower for the noodles the first time and zucchini slices the second. (My wife has diabetes.) If you're not cooking for a special diet, then there is no need to alter a thing in this recipe.

Oatmeal Raisin Cookies IX

Reviewed: Oct. 9, 2008
This was good, and would have been really good, except that it tasted a little oily. If I try it again, I'll cut the oil with apple sauce to see if that helps.

Avocado Dessert

Reviewed: Feb. 2, 2008
This is really good, like a subtle pudding. I cut the vanilla in half based on other reviews. I also halved the sugar because it seemed like a lot, but ended up adding back a couple teaspoons. I tried another version substituting lime for the vanilla and it was good, too. They both felt like they would be good as a sauce for something else.

Grilled Portobello Mushrooms

Reviewed: Sep. 10, 2007
This was yummy. I couldn't believe I was eating mushrooms. I didn't have canola oil so I used grapeseed oil. Also, I fell asleep so they marinated about three hours. It didn't hurt it at all. Since this was the first time I grilled mushrooms, it would have helped if the recipe specified grilling them face up, face down, or half the time on each side (which is what I did).

Peanut-Ginger Marinade

Reviewed: Sep. 8, 2007
This is SO GOOD. My guests could not stop raving about it. I almost took a star away because it made such a sticky mess on the grill, but once I tasted it I realized that it was a small price to pay for such a delicious dish.

Grilled Asian Chicken

Reviewed: Sep. 8, 2007
What a perfect marinade. The chicken tastes exquisite without the need to marinate for a long time. I substituted Splenda for the sugar (diabetic wife), and took the advice of others to substitute water for half the soy sauce. I also gently heated the chicken in the marinade to room temperature before grilling.

Chinese Chicken Salad III

Reviewed: Dec. 11, 2006
I just brought this to a party and everybody raved about it. The dressing was outrageously delicious. (I added slivered almonds to the salad and omitted the sugar from the dressing.)

Pumpkin Bread

Reviewed: Oct. 28, 2006
This pumpkin bread is delicious, especially if you like spice cakes. The bread is moist and has a tasty crust. I was amazed at how easy it was. It smelled so good that I had to taste it right out of the oven. But that was a mistake because its flavor was much better once it cooled. Modifications: I halved the recipe and used one egg plus one egg white. Also, I ran out of white sugar so used about half brown sugar. I also substituted Better Balance for the butter. Finally, the recipe seemed to call for a lot of cloves so I substituted Allspice for about half the cloves.

Amish Slaw

Reviewed: Jul. 2, 2006
This recipe is delicious if you like a light fresh-tasting non-mayonnaise cole slaw. I substituted Splenda for the sugar and cut it by about a third. I'll cut it by half next time because it still seemed a little sweet to me. Also, I only used about 2/3 of the dressing.

Scott Hibb's Amazing Whisky Grilled Baby Back Ribs

Reviewed: Jun. 3, 2006
The ribs were fall-off-the-bone tender, so you'll be in great shape if you follow the rib preparation and pre-baking. The sauce was tangy and sweet, pretty good really. My only complaint is that the ribs were a little bland, and I think the recipe could benefit from some measurements for the spices that are applied to the ribs before baking. Next time I will prepare the ribs the same way but try to find a good dry rub recipe on this site.

Super Easy Seared Ahi Tuna

Reviewed: Jun. 3, 2006
This was delicious and as quick and easy as a recipe could be. I didn't have Italian seasoned bread crumbs, so I sprinkled a little Italian seasoning before using regular bread crumbs.

Cream Cheese Brownies III

Reviewed: Dec. 29, 2003
These brownies are divine! I love a really rich chocolate taste and some reviews indicated that it wasn't that chocolate-y. So I used unsweetened chocolate and increased the sugar in the chocolate mixture to a little over a cup. I also added a little strong coffee. Because of other reviews, I increased the cream cheese to four ounces and I'm glad I did. Also, I didn't have any nuts, but they still came out REALLY DELICIOUS.

Cream Cheese Pound Cake I

Reviewed: Dec. 29, 2003
I baked this cake just as specified and it is the most delicious pound cake I've ever tasted. It's moist, too. I get lots of compliments on it whenever I serve it. It's fine by itself and it's also really good with berries and whipped cream. My only problem is that the top is crumbly and tends to flake off when I cut it, but that might be because my oven is very slow and I'm not sure I've got it at the right temperature. I made it once substituting Lighter Bake for half the butter and it was just as good.
