Honey Bean Salad

Reviewed: Apr. 19, 2014
Woah, this tastes awesome! The title of the recipe seriously messes me up, because honey? And beans? Luckily it got good ratings, and I was out of everything I needed to make regular 3 bean salad, so I HAD to give it a try! So happy I did. Delicious, no hint of honey (I suppose it balances out the vinegar - so don't worry about eating sweet, cold beans!), and very flavorful. Followed the recipe exactly, except used only half the oil and added some raw onion. My new go-to bean salad recipe! Try it people, don't be afraid of it! :-)

Thai Chicken

Reviewed: Apr. 13, 2014
Definite keeper for our family. I proceeded with caution when making this recipe, tasting as I went along. I took previous reviewers' advice and: 1.) Reduced the soy sauce to 1/3 c and 2.) Only used half the garlic called for. Also, I omitted the hot sauce from the dish because not everyone in my family likes spicy food (but those who did added Sriracha in their individual plates successfully). I don't know if this review will count as one that is reviewing something severely altered from the original recipe, but this recipe was awesome. In the future, I'll probably add 1/2 to 1 tablespoon more of brown sugar, either omitting or halfing the water called for (or adding a tablespoon of cornstarch - it would have been nice for the sauce to be thicker) and adding some cilantro instead of the green onion.

A Very Popular BBQ Sauce

Reviewed: Mar. 12, 2014
My family's go-to BBQ sauce! I took a couple of previous reviewers' suggestions and added a teaspoon of liquid smoke per 12 servings, and also bring it to a boil when I use it as a dipping sauce (gives it an even deeper color and thickens it a bit more). Other than that, I follow the recipe to a T. Wonderful!

Amish White Bread

Reviewed: Feb. 1, 2014
My very first time making bread was an astonishing success! Because I was afraid of wasting ingredients - in case I messed this up - I scaled the recipe down to make only one loaf, which I would suggest if it's your first time, too. (**Notes for first timers: My first rise took quite a while because my house was so cold. It ended up taking half the day to rise until I finally decided to put it near something warm. That did the trick! So don't give up if yours doesn't rise - consider moving it somewhere warmer. Also, kneading the dough after that first rise, man, I was convinced I was going to get a brick! I kneaded it for a while, trying to make it "soft" because when I took it out of the bowl and kneaded it "a bit," it was a very heavy, small and non-stretchy ball of dough! I let it rise the second time for more than 30 minutes near a warm spot again, praying it would rise that 1" AND IT DID! And it was so delicious! So don't give up in case you have problems like me!**) After reading suggestions to cut the sugar down for a more "traditional" white bread taste, I found it was still a tad sweeter than normal white bread, BUT I am way more excited to try it with the full sugar amount since now I know it'll probably taste exactly like Hawaiian bread!!! Since my oven runs hot, I only had to bake it 25 minutes. Excellent recipe, will not stray from it in case my bread making mojo gets squashed by another recipe!

Spaghetti Sauce with Ground Beef

Reviewed: Jan. 29, 2014
Followed the recipe exactly and though it had a pretty good flavor, I agree with a previous reviewer that it was missing something. For my family's tastes, I'll have to continue my search. Also, I don't know if I was supposed to drain the can of diced tomatoes or not, but I didn't get a "saucy" consistency - this didn't coat my pasta the way I'm used to spaghetti sauce coating pasta, the sauce itself had more of a ground-beef-slightly-coated-with-tomato-sauce look, if you can picture it. According to the pictures posted by people who've tried this recipe already, I may have missed something in the execution since it didn't look like this was a problem with anyone else.

Mayonnaise Biscuits

Reviewed: Jan. 22, 2014
Perfect, perfect, perfect! I was forced to use almond milk and Vegenaise (vegetarian mayo) and "make" my own self-rising flour (3 t baking powder/1 t salt added to the mix), and it STILL worked! Can't wait to try this recipe with some Hellman's & milk! Took another reviewer's advice to not over mix the dough, so I mixed the dry ingredients with each other first, then mixed the mayo and milk in a separate bowl before mixing the whole thing together. Fluffy, soft and delicious. Will become my go-to biscuit recipe!

Easy Pizza Sauce III

Reviewed: Jan. 20, 2014
Love the ease of this recipe! Followed the recipe to a T, and am giving it 4 stars only because it was a little tangy for our personal tastes. This recipe made enough sauce for 3 medium sized pizzas. Also, since we usually use pepperoni on our pizzas, I'll probably leave out the salt next time since it's already pretty salty from that. Will definitely use this recipe again, but I'll figure out how to cut the tang first!

Oaty Cereal Bars

Reviewed: Jan. 20, 2014
Perfect scenario to try this recipe: I had 2 cups of "healthy" cereal that I didn't want to waste, my always-looking-for-something-to-eat kiddos we're asking for a snack, and our pantry was basically cleaned out. I had all the necessary ingredients and scaled down the recipe to fit the dry ingredients (2 cups) I had. Success! Since I used a healthier (read: not very sweet) cereal, the honey/sugar combo was perfect for us. I will say that I did have a problem with the bars being hard (my jaw is still tired from all the chewing!), but I'm hoping that it's only because I need to tweak the ratio between the cereal and the honey/sugar/peanut butter "syrup". Since we like peanut butter, I may just add a little more peanut butter and a dash of cinnamon and hope that'll solve the hardness issue. Either way, great recipe!

Cream of Mushroom Soup I

Reviewed: Jan. 10, 2014
I know, I know, we're supposed to rate the recipe as is, but even though I didn't have sherry or half and half, I wanted to share that this recipe was STILL amazing! I used heavy cream instead of half and half, and I skipped the roux making step (I just added the flour to the already cooked vegetables and stock and thickened it up that way), but it was still so tasty, and much, much better than canned. As far as servings, it made about 5-6 cups of soup, so if you want more of this deliciousness, double the recipe! Definite keeper!
