Cake Mixes from Scratch and Variations

Reviewed: Feb. 19, 2009
This cake was awful. I followed the directions to the letter and still ended up with a tasteless, dry, hard cake. The cooking time is off by about 15 minutes to long.

Mama D's Italian Bread

Reviewed: Feb. 16, 2009
VERY GOOD BUT A BIT MORE DENSE THAN I WOULD HAVE LIKED. THE COOKING TIME I USED WAS ABOUT 40 MINUTES WITH AN ELECTRIC RANGE. I WOULD SUGGEST USING A BIT MORE SALT AND OTHER FLAVORING. ALL IN ALL AN EASY BREAD RECIPE.

Yellow Angel Food Cake

Reviewed: Feb. 14, 2009
THIS CAKE IS NICE AND FLUFFY. I DID ADD SOME VARIATIONS TO THE RECIPE. I ADDED 1 TABLESPOON OF ORANGE ZEST, 1/2 TS OF ORANGE EXTRACT AND 1/2 TS OF VANILLA. I ADDED THESE BECAUSE WITHOUT IT THE CAKE IS A BIT BLAND. I ALSO LOWERED THE COOK TIME TO 35 MINUTES AND LOWERED THE TEMPERATURE TO 325 DEGREES. I WORK WITH AN ELECTRIC RANGE SO I KEPT A CLOSE EYE. ALL IN ALL A FABULOUS RECIPE. I PLAN TO SERVE IT WITH A WHIPPED TOPPING AND A TROPICAL FRUIT MEDLEY. ENJOY!!!

Heavenly White Cake

Reviewed: Feb. 10, 2009
This is a very flavorful cake and goes well paired with a cream cheese frosting. However, perhaps I did something wrong because the cake was not moist at all. When I was mixing it I felt that it was to dry and almost kind of dough like. I agree with the other streviewers it could use an additional 1/2 cup of milk in the recipe. All in all not fabulous but still good.

Cream Cheese Coffee Cake II

This cake was disgusting. I am a seasoned baker and followed all directions to the letter. The cake was dry and tasteless and the filling was sour and unappealing.

Mall Pretzels

Reviewed: Feb. 3, 2009
These pretzels are very tasty and easy to work with. They don't quite taste as good as auntie anne's but I won't kick them out of the kitchen either. They are good plain but awesome with a topping.

Lighter Banana Muffins

Reviewed: Feb. 3, 2009
I've had the misfortune of trying some bad banana muffin recipes. I can assure you this recipe is very very good. It is a hearty muffin that along with a good cup of java or glass of milk will fill you up but not drag you down. I added 1 tablespoon of vanilla and 1/8 tsp of vanilla just to give them a little bit more kick. If you want to be super decadent add a bit of whipped cream when serving. They

DON'T CHANGE A THING. YES THE DOUGH IS ULTRA STICKY. HOWEVER,IF YOU SPOON THE DOUGH INTO A REGULAR LIGHITLY SPRAYED MUFFIN PAN YOU HAVE TO DO NOTHING ELSE. I FOLLOWED EVERYTHING TO THE LETTER AND THEY WERE DEVOURED BY MY FAMILY. A++ AND BRAVO TO THE CONTRIBUTOR.

Baked Potato Soup

I LOVE THIS RECIPE. IT IS DELICIOUS. TO MAKE IT LOWER IN FAT INSTEAD OF BACON I ADDED CANADIAN BACON. I ALSO ADDED FINELY CHOPPED CELERY AND CARROTS ABOUT 1/2C EACH. I ALSO ADDED 1/4 TSP GARLIC POWDER AND 1/2 TSP ONION POWDER. IT IS EASY AND FAST AND TO ME THE ULTIMATE COMFORT FOOD. BRAVO TO THE CONTRIBUTOR OF THIS RECIPE. I WILL MAKE THIS OVER AND OVER!!!

Fluffy Canadian Pancakes

Reviewed: May 26, 2008
THESE PANCAKES WERE LIGHT AND FLUFFY AND THEY MELTED IN THE MOUTH. I ADDED SOME VANILLA EXTRACT FOR A LITTLE EXTRA KICK BUT OTHERWISE I WOULDN'T DO ANYTHING ELSE TO THE RECIPE. THESE ARE GOOD WITH SOME MAPLE SYRUP OR TOPPED WITH FRUIT AND WHIPPED CREAM. I WOULD MAKE THESE AGAIN AND AGAIN.

Truck-Stop Buttermilk Pancakes

Reviewed: May 17, 2008
THESE PANCAKES WERE NOT FLAVORFUL OR FLUFFY AT ALL. I WOULDN'T RECOMMEND THESE AT ALL. IT SPECIFIED TO MUCH LIQUID AND IT NEEDED SOME TYPE OF FLAVORING AGENT. IT JUST WAS BLAND,FLAT AND OUTRIGHT BORING. DO NOT MAKE THE WHOLE MIX AS IT READS USE THE SITE MODIFIER TO MAKE A SMALLER BATCH AND SEE FOR YOURSELF.

THIS RECIPE IS VERY DELICIOUS. WE ADDED VANILLA EXTRACT BUT IT WOULD ALSO WOULD GOOD WITH BANANA EXTRACT. THESE ARE SO GOOD THEY CAN BE EATEN ON THEIR OWN OR WITH SYRUP. I AM NOT PARTIAL TO SWEETS SO I HAD MINE WITHOUT AND FOUND THEM TO BE AWESOME. TO MAKE THE KIDS DAY WE PILED THEM WITH WHIPPED TOPPING AND ADDITIONAL BANANA SLICES. THEY GOT A KICK OUT OF THEM. EVEN THE FINICKIEST EATER WILL LOVE THESE.

THESE PANCAKES WERE ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS. INSTEAD OF MARMALADE WE ADDED COOL WHIP AND DRAINED CANNED BABY ORANGE SECTIONS TO THE TOP AND MY OH MY WAS THAT A TREAT. THEY ARE SO GOOD YOU DON'T EVEN NEED TO ADD ANYTHING TO THE TOP. THEY ARE GOOD AS IS. WHICH IS ESPECIALLY GOOD FOR THE KIDS AS A WHOLESOME QUICK SNACK. I PREPARE A BUNCH AND KEEP THEM AROUND. THIS RECIPE IS DEFINATELY A KEEPER. THANK YOU TO THE CONTRIBUTOR.

Lemon Blueberry Drop Scones

Reviewed: Feb. 4, 2008
I have never made scones before and must say that although i have never made them i have definately eaten my fair share and must say these are really good. i substituted orange zest for lemon and substituted strawberry yogurt because that is what i had on hand but they came out awesome. the consistency was moist and the flavor was sharp. i made mine with a cinna sugar topping instead of the glaze because i prefer less sugar. kudos to the contributor for a recipe well done and executed. thank you.

Chocolate Cream Cheese Frosting

Reviewed: Jan. 21, 2008
THIS FROSTING HAD A GREAT CONSISTENCY AND SUPERB FLAVOR. ABOUT THE ONLY THING I DID DIFFERENT WAS I ADDED 2 TEASPOON OF INSTANT COFFEE TO THE MELTED CHOCOLATE TO INTENSIFY THE FLAVOR. IT WAS SUPER SWEET AND FLAVORFUL. NEXT TIME I MAY ADD MAYBE 3/4 CUP LESS SUGAR. I ALSO USED LOW FAT CREAM CHEESE AND IT STILL CAME OUT FABULOUS. THIS IS A KEEPER FOR ANY BAKER. KUDOS TO THE RECIPE CREATOR.

Dark Chocolate Cake I

Reviewed: Jan. 21, 2008
I TRIED THIS RECIPE YESTERDAY AND MUST SAY IT IS ONE OF THE BEST CHOCOLATE CAKE RECIPES I HAVE BAKED IN A LONG TIME. THE CHOCOLATE FLAVOR IS VERY INTENSE. I ADDED 2 TEASPOONS OF INSTANT COFFEE TO THE CHOCOLATE MIXTURE WHILE STILL HOT. ALOT OF HOMEMADE CAKES COME OUT WAY TOO DENSE BUT THIS ONE WAS PERFECT. I PAIRED IT WITH A CHOCOLATE CREAM CHEESE FROSTING BUT IT REALLY DIDN'T NEED IT. NEXT TIME I'LL JUST MAKE IT PLAIN. I ALSO HAD TO ADJUST THE COOKING TIME A BIT BECAUSE EITHER MY OVEN WAS OFF OR RECIPE DIDN'T CALL FOR ENOUGH TIME. CHECK WITH YOURS IT MIGHT BE DIFFERENT I HAVE AN ELECTRIC OVEN THAT COULD BE WHY. THIS CAKE IS FABULOUS MY HUBBY AND MY NIECES LOVED IT.

Amusement Park Cornbread

Reviewed: Jan. 14, 2004
I TRIED THIS RECIPE AND I MUST SAY THAT I WAS PLEASANTLY SURPRISED. IT WAS AN ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS RECIPE. THE ONLY THING THAT I DID WAS INSTEAD OF USING 3/4 CUPS OF CORNMEAL I USED 11/3 AND I USED 1 1/2 CUPS OF ALL PURPOSE FLOUR INSTEAD OF TWO. THE RECIPE ALSO NEEDED MORE TIME IN THE OVEN ABOUT 37 MINUTES BUT THEN AGAIN IT COULD HAVE BEEN MY OVEN. IT WAS A SWEET CORNBREAD WITHOUT BEING OVERLY SWEET AND THE TEXTURE WAS NICE AND FIRM NOT RUBBERY OR GLUEY LIKE SOME OTHER CORN BREAD RECIPE. MY FAMILY HAS REQUESTED THAT I MAKE IT AGAIN AND THEY ARE A TOUGH CROWD TO PLEASE. MY THANKS GO TO THE RECIPE CONTRIBUTOR.
