My grandmother inspired me as a child. I was always in the kitchen right be her side whenever she baked something. Since marrying some 30+ years ago and raising six kids (who are all adults and living on their own, now)my husband and I have endured pain, disappointment and health ills, as well as triumphs, successes, joy and getting healthier. Since becoming empty nesters, recently I have more time on my hands than ever, especially since I'm not working. So now I can bake....my real passion. Currently I'm self- publishing a cookbook and am in the process of setting up my own baking business and website. My greatest desire is to have my own bakery. Hope everyone checks out my website once it's up and running....will keep you posted. For now I spend my time creating files on my computer to keep all my jillions of recipes organized. A time consuming task, to say the least. But fun!
I'm lookiing forward to being a continued member here at allrecipes and can't wait to hear from others.
My favorite things to cook
I love baking Lasagna, Seafood Lo Mein Stir Fry (adding lots of shrimp, crabmeat, etc.), and frying up just about any kind of fresh fish. But I truly love baking pound cakes, gourmet cakes and lots of different kinds of chocolate cakes and working with ganache and fondant.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Thanksgiving has got to be the number 1 family cooking traditon in my family. This is the best time of year for us. I know it's suppposed to be "family" oriented, but most times I just can't seem to relendquish the kitchen to anyone else(ha!). I promised my self I will do better this coming Thanksgiving. It's still such a joy having all of the children and their families home. The best part is they all get to clean up while I relax! Just kidding. We all help, even though the kids relentlessly try to get me to forego helping, but to no avail I wander somehow back in the kitchen and end up helping, anyway.
My cooking triumphs
My cooking triumps...let's see, well Thanksgiving dinner is definitely a triump. A famous signature cake (more about that later)I've created, and a buttermilk cornbread I make that is failproof everytime.
My cooking tragedies
One of my worst cooking tragedies is when I was newly married and quite young. I attempted to make potato salad for a church group. OMG! It was so dry and absolutely horrible. But everyone ate it, well some of it anyway. How embarrasing for me. And just so you know, I've learned to make great potato salad since then. Got the recipe from my mother. My husband actually has said that it's better than hers. Thank goodness he never told her!
I told him that will be our little secret.
