Prune and Raisin Filled Cookies

Reviewed: Sep. 13, 2012
I thought these could use some more filling -- mine is a little sparse looking compared to the photograph. This was otherwise very straightforward and easy to do. The dough was simple to work with. I made a half-batch but used the entire quantity of icing. Thanks for sharing your recipe!

Chef John's Buttermilk Biscuits

Reviewed: Sep. 12, 2012
This was my first time making roll-out biscuits (usually I do drop biscuits) and they came out wonderfully. Mine don't look like his with the pretty layers, but I'm sure that's an experience issue -- I lack it! Thanks for sharing, Chef John!

Creamy Dill Cucumber Toasties

Reviewed: Sep. 12, 2012
Er, what provides the "toasties" in these toasties? I double checked, nowhere does it say to toast the bread! I did anyway. I skipped the mayo since I used whipped cream cheese and it comes out of the tub simple to spread. Thanks for sharing your recipe, we really liked these and can see using other veggies sliced thin for their crispiness in this recipe, too!

Texas Jambalaya

Reviewed: Sep. 6, 2012
Made with extra veggies, brown rice, all smoked sausage, and no ranch beans to be found so I used chili beans. I don't know if they're a reasonable substitute, but it came out really tasty, so we'll do it that way again. I baked mine (using brown rice) for 2.5 hours because I prefer these sorts of things as a baked casserole :) Thanks for sharing!

Rich Chocolate Truffle Pie

Reviewed: Sep. 3, 2012
We really liked this pie a lot. It tastes like a good chocolate mousse. How good depends on the quality of your chocolate. I omitted the sugar (and would do that again). In the future I would make my own crust (that's always the best!) and for a variation I would add a brick of cream cheese for a depth of flavor and to help it keep shape at room temperature. This makes a great freezer pie, too. Thanks for sharing your recipe!

Grilled Orange Chicken

Reviewed: Aug. 18, 2012
We really, really liked this. I used BLSL chicken, peppers, and onions and did kebabs of this, then drenched the kebabs in the untainted sauce when it was all done. I did marinate in soy instead of just dusting with salt. This doesn't come out with a distinctly Asian flavor, or an orange flavor, or a vinegar flavor, but somewhere delicious in between. A wonderful sweet & sour flavor. We decided we would make this again, with most any flavor of jam or jelly that we had on hand. Thanks for sharing, this is absolutely going in the keeper box!

Hummingbird Cake II

Reviewed: Aug. 16, 2012
Made this into a 9x13 sheet cake. Came out perfectly. I especially liked the frosting -- mine wasn't runny at all. I do think I would add another 8oz of pineapple in the future. Thanks for sharing!

Slow Cooker Cocktail Smokies

Reviewed: Aug. 15, 2012
I did mine on the stovetop, stirring frequently til the sauce thickened into a beautiful gel (which it does because of the jelly). I used Sauer's brand barbecue sauce because it's extremely sour, almost no sugar in it, a thin tomato-vinegar sauce which is popular here but maybe not so much elsewhere. These were terrific, thanks for sharing!

Fresh Rhubarb Pie

Reviewed: Aug. 12, 2012
This firmed up beautifully in the fridge overnight and had a fantastic sweet-tart flavor. Mine was not quite as pink as what is in the picture, perhaps a bit more flour than necessary in my case? Thanks for sharing!

Curried Coconut Chicken

Reviewed: Aug. 9, 2012
This was just a touch sweeter than I anticipated so I might dial that back a bit next time. Or I might use brown sugar -- there's another curried chicken with coconut recipe on here that uses brown sugar that comes out sweet and I love the sweetness. Odd how that works. Anyway, used light coconut milk and had to simmer it the last 30 minutes with the top off to get it to thicken. I knew that would happen with using light coconut milk, so I was prepared for it. Thanks for sharing your recipe -- we liked this :)

Christmas Brunch Casserole

Reviewed: Aug. 6, 2012
I used fresh potatoes, more eggs, less milk, and more cheese. I still thought this could use some more flavoring. Overall it was satisfying but next time I'd add some more spices or cheese liven up that much potatoes! Thanks for sharing.

Adrienne's Cucumber Salad

Reviewed: Aug. 3, 2012
This was a 5 star recipe even though I didn't read the instructions til just now, so I didn't heat my vinegar solution up at all. Will do next time as I know that'll infuse the veggies with even more flavor. Thanks for sharing!

Little Mickey's Favorite Cheesecake

Reviewed: Aug. 3, 2012
This is wonderful, but as written that's too much butter in the crust. I would highly recommend this with or without all the pretty decorative additions you see on the picture, though crushed Butterfinger bars would be divine. Thanks for sharing!

Sausage, Peppers, Onions, and Potato Bake

Reviewed: Aug. 2, 2012
I halved this recipe and used Johnsonville chicken & pork blend Italian sausage. We thought this was very tasty in a subtle way as much of the flavor came from the semi-caramelized veggies and of course the tasty sausage juice soaked into the potatoes. We will have this meal again, thank you!

Strawberry Pie

Reviewed: Jul. 30, 2012
Came out beautifully, gelled up perfectly, though I still prefer the taste of shortcakes and plain berries. This was a nice change and a pretty presentation since it held together in perfect slices. Thanks for sharing!

Mom's Big Burgers

Reviewed: Jul. 28, 2012
These were fine, but nothing to get excited about. We did omit the avocado as we don't like it, maybe that would've made this unique (if we liked avocado). Thanks for the recipe!

We liked this a lot. We served it with grilled chicken sliced in so it was a whole meal. Very satisfying, thank you!

Pork Chops Stuffed with Smoked Gouda and Bacon

Reviewed: Jul. 23, 2012
We did this with a pork tenderloin and could not be more pleased with the outcome. I know this is one of those recipes where you think "Duh, of course it tastes good, pork and bacon and smoked cheese!" but seriously, it really is even better than expected due to the action of the grill. The cheese kind of caramelizes into something special. Try it, it's worth the exorbitant cost of a bit of Gouda!

Thai Ginger Chicken (Gai Pad King)

Reviewed: Jul. 21, 2012
We thought this was good, but not great. I'm sure the Thai Kitchen red curry was to blame -- even though I doubled it, there was no real punch to this. Still good though.

Better Than Brad Pitt Cake

Reviewed: Jul. 9, 2012
I thought this was good, but not great. A little too sweet, I think I would've preferred draining the pineapple and just spreading it straight over without the step where you add sugar and cook it. That's just me though, everyone else really liked this. Thanks for the recipe!
