Smoky Mac 'n Cheese

Reviewed: Sep. 5, 2011
Not a keeper, IMO. While I cut down the amount of smoked cheddar by subbing 1/2 sharp, it wasn't very "cheesy". Wouldn't recommend.

Best Cream of Potato Soup

Reviewed: Feb. 23, 2011
AMAZING! Of all the recipes for Cream of Potato Soup on this site, I happened on this one and feel like I won the lottery! I love the fact that this isn't your average cream of potato soup recipe - this one goes above and beyond. Like others, I added more broth (vegetable) and a touch of half and half once it was almost done as well as a little Asiago cheese. Really comforting during the cold snap we're having in upstate New York. Thank you so much for sharing this recipe!

Happy Shrimp

Reviewed: Feb. 13, 2011
Great for a nice Sunday meal - used vegetable broth instead of wine. I doubled the sauce and was glad I did as it wouldn't have been enough if I didn't. Added more salt, asiago cheese, and red pepper flakes to give it a little heat.

Grandma Ople's Apple Pie

Reviewed: Oct. 28, 2010
If my boyfriend's comments are any testament to how wonderful this is, you have to try this if you're still on the fence. He literally raved for 2 days - on and on about how this was the BEST apple pie he's ever had. The pie didn't even last a full 24 hours. I was skeptical because it didn't call for cinnamon and next time, I just may add it, but it's still wonderful without it. As another reviewer aptly described, it's got a golden buttery taste. I used what apples I had (Ida Red)and opted to pour the butter mixture over the apples before I put the top crust on; seemed easier and less messy that way. I'll also bake at 350 for the entire time so as to avoid burning the crust. Thanks so much for posting this recipe!

Portobello Mushroom Burgers

Reviewed: Jun. 9, 2010
This deserves to be made on a regular basis during grilling season - top notch! I didn't use the entire 1/4 cup of balsamic vinegar and opted to use fresh basil and oregano which I think made a huge difference. Next time, I'll take the suggestions of others and caramelize some onions to throw on top. So good! Thank you for sharing this recipe!

Cream Cheese Squares

Reviewed: Mar. 31, 2010
Oh. My. God. Considering how wonderful these are, I'm trying to figure out why it's taken me so long to make them! Thank goodness I sorted through my overflowing recipe box and found this treasure. I wanted something easy and this fit the bill. As per other reviewers, I chose to decrease the butter to 1/4 cup and to brush it on instead of pour it on. They were perfect at 28 minutes. Thanks a bunch for sharing this recipe!

Chef Scott's Pico de Gallo

Reviewed: Jan. 29, 2010
Nice and fresh tasting... I used red wine vinegar instead of white, less oil and cilantro, and a touch of cumin. Easy to play around with the amounts of ingredients to suit your taste. Thanks for sharing this recipe!

Bread Machine Calzone

Reviewed: Jan. 25, 2010
Very good - I liked this recipe better than the other calzone recipe I tried. Like others, I used milk in place of water and powdered milk. I think this is what helped produce such a nice soft dough/crust. I only used the recipe for the dough, adding garlic powder and oregano for added flavor. I did have to bake mine slightly longer than stated, and still was able to avoid a tough/hard crust. Great recipe; thank you for sharing!

Bread Machine Bagels

Reviewed: Jan. 18, 2010
Not bad considering this was the first time making my own bagels. They were kinda flat, which was probably my fault for manhandling the dough. Now that I know the process, I'll try these again. I used 1 1/8 cup water as suggested by other reviewers. I topped some with black sesame seeds (mmm!) and others with sea salt and italian seasoning (they were yummy too!) Oh, and I boiled them for 2 minutes instead of 1. Thanks for sharing this recipe!

Debdoozie's Blue Ribbon Chili

Reviewed: Jan. 18, 2010
I've been searching for a chili recipe to suit my taste and here it is! I used the slow cooker method and was very happy with the results. I used Morningstar Vegetarian Burger Crumbles instead of ground beef and found a Wendy's chili seasoning mix copycat recipe online that I used. Medium salsa lends the perfect amount of heat. Next time, I'm going to add just a touch of brown sugar and see what that does. Brilliant recipe; thank you for sharing!

Blackened Shrimp Stroganoff

Reviewed: Jan. 10, 2010
This was a big hit in our house. Not sure why some reviewers thought this was bland. It's anything but! I used minced garlic instead of shallots and light sour cream in an attempt to bring down the fat content. I included the capers, but had to do without the roasted red peppers as I didn't have any. Still, this was very flavorful; presentation gets 5 stars as well. I used a combination of vegetarian chicken broth and white wine - next time, I'll be on the look out for reduced sodium broth and maybe reduce the amount of Cajun seasoning as the sodium content is a bit high for my diet/liking. Thanks a bunch for sharing this recipe!

Seasoned Potato Fries

Reviewed: Jan. 4, 2010
These got rave reviews from the boyfriend. Easy to prepare and full of flavor. I cooked mine a tad bit longer to increase the "crispy" factor. Although boyfriend didn't think so, imo, I went a little overboard on the Italian seasoning and garlic salt (used that in place of garlic powder and salt). Either way, these were a winner! Thank you for sharing this recipe!

Linguine with Clam Sauce and Baby Portobello Mushrooms

Reviewed: Jan. 2, 2010
This was very good! I omitted the mushrooms and the chicken bouillion and was very happy with the end results. Next time, I think I'll double the recipe as well as the amount of garlic as we would have liked more sauce. I was a little anxious about the Worcestershire sauce, but it definitely adds to the dish. Very tasty! Thank you for sharing this recipe!

Sour Cream Cut-Outs

Reviewed: Dec. 19, 2009
I like the taste, but next time, will cut the cooking time by a few minutes, as 10 minutes produced a somewhat dry cookie. They hold their shape very well and look really pretty frosted with sugar cookie frosting from this site. Thank you for sharing this recipe!

Sugar Cookie Icing

Reviewed: Dec. 19, 2009
As written, the liquid amounts are off, as many other reviewers noted as well. But, once you play around with the amounts, it turns out just as promised. Hence, the reason I'm giving this 5 stars. The almond extract was okay, but I'm going to take the recommendations of others who suggested lemon, orange, or peppermint extract. Thank you for sharing this recipe!

Raspberry Ribbons

Reviewed: Dec. 10, 2009
I took these for a test run last night and am happy to report that they'll definitely be on my cookie plates this year. They came together in no time - dough is great to work with and shape into logs. I formed them into 2" X 8" logs; I wouldn't want to go any longer than that. Very festive looking with the raspberry jam down the center. Very tasty too! Thanks for sharing this recipe!

Simple Herb Rice

Reviewed: Nov. 16, 2009
Pretty good considering how easy it is to make. To make it even easier (and I think tastier), I just heated up vegetarian chicken broth instead of using the bouillon cubes. I'd like to add some garlic next time I make this. Thank you for sharing this recipe!

Garlic Potatoes Gratin

Reviewed: Nov. 8, 2009
I loved the addition of garlic, but think I'd be more apt to make au gratin potatoes the way I'm used to, starting with a roux, etc. Used 1 cup 1% milk and 1/2 cup cream. Thanks for sharing!

All-Day Apple Butter

Reviewed: Nov. 8, 2009
I'm so glad I tried this as I now know I'll be making more throughout the holiday season. Whisking really helped break up the apples to produce a smooth consistency. Like others, I opted to reduce sugar by half and used 1c brown, 1 c white. Since I didn't have cloves, I used pumpkin pie spice in its place. Oh, and since I didn't have quite 5 1/2 pounds of apples, I used some organic pears for the remaining amount. This is soooo good! Thank you for sharing this recipe!
