I am now retired and have the time to do more around the house and cooking. I love to try new recipes and have tried some really good ones here. I am most definitely Southern in cooking style, but enjoy trying other cuisines. My husband is also retired and we have 2 Chihuahuas which have us well trained at catering to their every whim. We also love to travel when we have time.
My favorite things to cook
Chicken, Pork, Seafood. Love casseroles and stir-frys. I had to get a lot more creative since being diagnosed as Lactose intolerant in early 2012. Sometimes it's really difficult to find good recipes where substitutes can be made that don't alter the taste of the dish.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Thanksgiving and Christmas are the biggest traditions meals. We must always have blueberry congealed salad, deviled eggs, pumpkin pie along with the usual turkey, ham, dressing, etc.
My cooking triumphs
My family really enjoys my pumpkin pies and any type of cake I make. The cookies I do at Christmas are also big hits.
My cooking tragedies
This is such a sad tragedy, but also the funniest. About 20 years ago, I used to do all the Christmas cooking at my great-aunts house as that was where we all gathered on Christmas eve. My aunt had turned one of the burners on the stove on low to get ready to make tea, but I didn't know it. The phone rang and she went to answer it. I came into the kitchen and took my 2 pans of dressing (which were perfect) out of the oven and sat them on the top of the stove with one of them on top of the burner she had turned on. I went to the bathroom and BOOM!. Scared the dickens out of me and I ran to the kitchen to see a pan of dressing had exploded. There was dressing from ceiling to floor and glass everywhere. Took a couple of hours to clean it all up. We all (the family that is left) still laugh about that.
