French Bread

I've never baked bread before (except for banana bread) and I'm happy to say that my first time was not a failure! Actually, it's very tasty! The only thing that I did differently was proof the yeast for about 5 minutes because I only had 2 packets of the yeast. This is a very forgiving recipe, too. I ended up using about 5 1/2 cups of flour, and no cornmeal (because I forgot). We also used a whole egg for the eggwash (because son wanted to learn to separate eggs and it didn't go so well). Bread is still very edible after all the abuse we gave it, so 5 stars!

Chinese Napa Cabbage Salad

I really like this recipe! First time ever trying the Asian cabbage salad thing, and I ended up making it three nights in a row because it was delicious. This recipe is also very fool proof in that you can add/subtract many different ingredients and it still tastes great. It also goes great with many different dishes. I was making ginger pork and was worried the taste would be too contrasting, but it was perfect! I used plain green cabbage because it was on sale, skipped the almonds because I didn't have any on hand, and substituted half a white onion for the green onion. I also reduced the vinegar and sugar in the dressing by about half. Also: DON'T add the ramen seasoning. The seasoning really masks the freshness of the veggies in our opinion. For those of you that are MSG sensitive, this is a great way to enjoy this recipe.

Chocolate Chip Dream Bars

Good recipe but definitely needs to be tweaked to fit your tastes. I doubled the recipe, and cut down the brown sugar in half in the crust and the filling. I also put it in a 8 x 11 pan. Still too sweet for me, but my 6 year old loves it (of course). Next time I'm cutting down on the sugar even more. Cooked for about 25 minutes and was real gooey when I pulled it out of the oven, but I let set for 15 minutes and we each had a bar. Was still a little gooey but I am sure it will set up fine for tomorrow. So, in short: (Like everyone else has said here) Skip the frosting unless this is going to be made for sugar crazy 6 year olds. Double recipe and cut brown sugar in half. Use smaller pan.
